USS Cobb
More actions
The USS Cobb (NCC-90219) is a Reliant-class frigate that currently serves in the Fourth Fleet's Task Force 21. The Cobb is primarily assigned to operate out of Starbase 21 as a multi-role starship performing local patrols and supporting the colonial logistics of the area.
History
The Cobb was commissioned in 2400 with the intent of it being assigned to Starbase 21 upon the station's commissioning. Shortly after its commissioning, the Cobb participated in Frontier Day.
After Frontier Day, the Cobb was re-crewed and subsequently voyaged to its original assignment. The Cobb spent the time until Starbase 21 became operational by patrolling the area surrounding Izar. Once the station came online, the ship was assigned to Starbase 21 as an attached ship, performing any duties that the station required.
In early 2403, the USS Cobb vanished while docking at Starbase 21 and was eventually located in an alternate reality. Several members of the crew, the Captain among them, had sustained injuries during transit and received medical aid in the form of cognitive-assistive implants - technology that in this reality was considered standard care, but blurred the line between restoration and enhancement.
The Cobb was recovered by the USS Shadow and returned to its native reality.
Crew
Captain Charles Corrin - a human male in his late forties with a background in xenolinguistics and prior experience as Chief Diplomatic Officer. After taking command of the USS Cobb in 2402, morale has improved considerably. He is considered well-liked and well-connected, though recent exposure to a cognitive-assistive implant after severe neurological injury made several members of his crew doubtful of his ability to lead.
Namesake
The Cobb derives its name from Molly Cobb, the first female astronaut to step foot on Mars during the Ares missions.
In Play
- The Cobb is a Task Unit Asset, and any member of Task Force 21 can feature it in their stories. As such, the Cobb's work could be mentioned/referenced as part of your mission.
- The Cobb may require your ship to help them with research or a mission it has been assigned to.
- The Cobb can be used like any other task unit asset, showing up to resupply or deliver officers, or mentioned off-screen by dealing with distant problems or discovering the initial plot hook that your ship is sent to deal with.
Encounters
The following story prompt is open for adoption. If you’re interested in taking it on, please reach out to your Task Force staff to let them know. The bullet points below are meant as optional ideas for development rather than fixed requirements.
The Cobb is assigned to rendezvous with your vessel to deliver new personnel as part of ongoing staff rotation. During transfer, it becomes apparent that the conditions aboard the Cobbrid have been strained. Limited space and inoperative recreational facilities have impacted the crew’s morale.
Following the handover, the captain of the Cobb requests temporary shore leave aboard your vessel for a few days before returning to duty.
- Granting the request puts immediate strain on your ship and raises questions of capacity, fairness, and precedent. Declining it risks degrading morale on a ship expected to keep supporting Task Force operations.
- Engineering teams of both vessels work to repair recreational facilities when it becomes clear that they have been deliberately disabled as a temporary safety measure following an undocumented systems incident.
- Upon investigation, your crew may discover that the relevant logs have been partially scrubbed, and no engineer of the Cobb's crew is willing to formally attest to the original failure. Further reconstructions of the logs suggest the original failure was triggered by an emergency modification made by a junior engineer in response to a misinterpreted dataset. The crew’s silence is not conspitational but protective.
