TF72 Wildfire Scenario

From Bravo Fleet

Task Force 72, the Fourth Fleet’s Diplomatic Operations unit, is assigned to maintain relations with the Klingon Houses across this region and secure the cooperation needed to withstand the crisis. Its captains must negotiate scientific access, assistance to threatened settlements, exchanges of sensor information and coordination against raids.

The House of Lorkoth is an important partner. Vassals of the House of Koloth, its members have considerable diplomatic experience and supported Starfleet during the Archanis and Deneb crises. They see no dishonour in requesting assistance from valued allies. The challenge is therefore not persuading Lorkoth to accept help, but ensuring that cooperation does not leave its settlements exposed or strengthen its rivals. Sharing sensor records, for example, might reveal how thinly its defensive patrols are stretched.

Beyond these established friendships, the House of Qerthav controls several useful border anchorages and openly supports Chancellor Toral. Its commanders regard an expanding Starfleet presence with suspicion, even when their own settlements need technical or medical assistance. One might welcome engineers while refusing their security escort. Another might offer convoy protection in exchange for Federation recognition of a disputed claim. Practical cooperation must not become an endorsement of territorial ambitions.

Existing disputes further complicate the response. The Houses of D’Chok and Noggra are already fighting near the rimward Federation border, close to Gorn space; their conflict has spilt across the frontier. A relief convoy could require passage through contested territory, or an evacuation could depend on facilities controlled by a rival. TF72 must prevent emergency arrangements from becoming opportunities to prosecute these older conflicts.

Agreements must also survive events. A Gorn raid might destroy ships promised to a joint patrol. A communications failure could make a delayed convoy appear deliberately withheld. Scientific access negotiated for one vessel might be challenged when an armed escort arrives. Captains will need to protect lives while repairing the understandings that made assistance possible.

Ships may cultivate relations with a single House, mediate between neighbours or sustain cooperation along a threatened route. Their task is to keep assistance moving without surrendering Federation principles, undermining Klingon sovereignty or allowing today’s emergency to become tomorrow’s lasting war.

Encounters

These concepts below are story prompts any writer can use to tell their story. All the TF47 encounters are unique, which means any member interested in writing one of these prompts should contact their TF staff first. It is perfectly acceptable to use these ideas as inspiration for a similar story using a different location.

  • House Lorkoth has agreed to share sensor data and coordinate patrols with Starfleet. However, their data reveals their defensive lines are critically thin. A Gorn raiding party exploits this weakness, striking a Lorkoth outpost just as a Starfleet vessel is scheduled to arrive for a joint scientific observation.
  • A Qerthav-controlled agricultural colony is suffering from crop failures due to the stellar radiation. They have formally requested Starfleet's assistance with atmospheric processors and radiation shielding, but explicitly refuse any Starfleet security presence, viewing it as a prelude to occupation. At the same time, intelligence suggests the Gorn are actively scouting this system for a new breeding ground.
  • A Federation science station studying the stellar phenomenon is caught in the crossfire of the ongoing skirmish between the Houses of D'Chok and Noggra. Both houses claim the station is in their territory and is a legitimate target for their rival. The station's personnel are in immediate danger, but any evacuation requires safe passage granted by one of the houses.
