USS Yamato

From Bravo Fleet

"No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it."
—Terry Pratchett - Ship's dedication quote

U.S.S. Yamato is a Sovereign-class Federation starship currently assigned to Fourth Fleet's Task Force 72 as the flagship of the Yamato Exploratory Cruiser Division. She is currently under the command of Captain Solaris McLaren. As part of Task Force 72, the Yamato often undertakes long term exploratory missions, beyond the borders of the Federation. However, the ship is very adaptable and will turn its focus inward toward Federation space if needed.

Namesake & Lineage

The Yamato is named for the World War II era Japanese battleship Yamato.

The fourth starship to bear the name the Yamato joins a long lineage of ships within Starfleet. The ship's immediate predecessor is credited with finding the long-thought-lost Iconian homeworld.

Service History

Construction & Launch

Part of the first group of five Sovereign-class starships ordered by Starfleet before the Dominion War, the Yamato was laid down at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in mid-2372 alongside her sister ship the U.S.S. Musashi. Launched on stardate 50897.6, she entered service just a few months before the war began.

Post-Launch

Dominion War and Beyond

The Yamato served with distinction during the Dominion War, taking part in several major battles. Following the war, she returned to Starfleet's original mission of exploration for some time before being sent to the reserves in 2389. She remained ready to be reactivated at the Avalon Fleet Yards until 2401, when she was transferred to Task Force 17.

Return to Service

Solaris McLaren's Command

In the year 2401 the Yamato was transferred out of the reserve fleet and into Task Force 17 and placed under the command of Captain Solaris McLaren. Her mission was to track down a stolen Starfleet prototype weapon and stop it from being auctioned off to an enemy faction. An away team from the ship consisting of the Captain, Chief Engineer and Chief Medical Officer infiltrated a station located in the Badlands and managed to recover the prototype weapon and its plans before it could be auctioned off. However having witnessed the unrestrained destruction that the weapon could cause, Captain McLaren elected to sabotage the weapon and eject it into the Badlands rather than see it returned to Starfleet, believing the weapon to be too powerful to exist. Only the members of the away team are aware of this.

The Yamato then returned to the Typhon Expanse, where she began an investigation of a sector shrouded in sensor distortions.

Shortly thereafter she was transferred to Task Force 72.

Service Along the Tholian Border

In mid-2402 the Yamato was assigned to Task Force 72, assigned to explore regions located around the border with the Tholian Assembly.

Configuration

The Yamato is an uprated Sovereign-class exploratory cruiser, with only minor changes accrued over her years of service. The addition of a pair of impulse engines to the engineering hull, under the fantail, allow for the ship to move with the saucer separated.

Main Bridge

Yamato-bridge.jpg

Shortly before her reactivation, the Yamato's bridge was redesigned and expanded to accommodate her expected mission profile of long-term exploration. It features a raised command area with space for the Command Officer, Executive Officer and an advisor. This is flanked by a large rail containing the tactical station. The port side of the bridge contains the engineering stations, with the science station on the opposite side of the bridge. The aft section of the bridge contains additional engineering and operations stations that can be reconfigured based on the mission profile and a large holotable showing a detailed readout of the ship in front of the large master systems display on the aft bulkhead. Toward the front of the bridge are stations for the flight controller and operations officer sitting in a slightly lowered section. Access to the bridge is provided by three turbolifts, one each toward the bow on the port and starboard sides and one in the starboard-side aft position. Access to the CO's ready room and XO's office are available at the front of the bridge next to each turbolift. Access to the observation lounge is available on the port-side aft of the bridge.

Battle Bridge

The Yamato's battle bridge is located on deck 12 , in the engineering hull. During normal ship operation the battle bridge is unstaffed. When the the ship under goes separation procedures the engineering hull is commanded by the ships commanding officer while the saucer section is commanded by the ships executive office. Because the engineering hull contained the majority of the ships main weapons, including the ships fearsome pulse fire quantum torpedo turret and because the engineering hull retains use of both the ships warp core and its warp engines, the battle bridge is oriented toward tactical operations, with a pair of tactical stations behind the CO's chair. To the front are the flight control and operations stations. 4 stations line the exterior of the battle bridge, dedicated to engineering and damage control operations. A small office is located forward to port and access to the battle bridge is served by 3 turbolifts, including a single express lift that can deliver the command crew directly from the main bridge.

Support Craft

The Yamato embarks a variety of support craft to support her in her missions.

Type 9 Shuttles

The smallest of Yamato's support craft, Type 9 shuttles don't have the range or endurance of their larger brethren aboard the ship but still have the ability to carry out a variety of tasks. The Yamato' carries four of these shuttles in inventory.

  • Fisher
  • Lambert
  • Kestrel
  • Archer

Type 11 Shuttles

Yamato carries four Type-11 shuttles in inventory. These shuttles are not as large or as adaptable as runabouts, but can be ready quicker if needed on short notice.

  • Bond
  • Trevelyan
  • Tanner
  • Boothroyd

Type 17 Shuttles

Yamato carries two Type-17 cargo shuttles in inventory.

  • Ryan
  • Greer

Danube-class Runabouts

Yamato carries two Danube-class runabouts as her standard runabout complement. This class was selected over newer types for its modularity and capability for independent operations.

  • Kuryakin
  • Solo

Valkyrie-class Starfighters

The Yamato carries a flight of four Valkyrie-class fighters at the expense of carrying two less Danube-class runabouts. These fighters provide added protection and strike potential on long term missions away from the support of other installations of starships. These fighters fly under the call sign 'Spectre' when undertaking flight operations.

  • Spectre 1
  • Spectre 2
  • Spectre 3
  • Spectre 4

Captain's Yacht

Like all Sovereign-class starships, the Yamato has an integrated captain's yacht for the CO's private use.
