RRW Kormoran

From Bravo Fleet

RRW Kormoran (RRW-3024) is a Malem-class Romulan bird of prey, presently assigned to the Fourth Fleet Task Force 86 under a cross-command exchange program.  Her current captain is Commander Sevina Temoris.

History

RRW Kormoran was laid down at the New Republican Fleet Yards in orbit of New Romulus in 2392, with construction completed in early 2394. She first commissioned in 2395. In her first years, Kormoran was often sent to patrol the borders of the Romulan Republic, both serving as a physical reassurance of the Republic's interest in keeping its citizens safe from pirates and keeping an eye on the Republic's neighbors, particularly the Romulan Free State, then known as the Star Empire of Rator.

Since 2400, Kormoran has operated as a rapid-response asset, one of several employed not as patrol craft but operating from hub colonies and facilities to reinforce local patrols in the event of attack.  The destabilization of subspace due to the Blackout phenomenon of 2402 prevented her from leaving her hub system to respond to the subsequent Vaadwaur invasion attempt, the Nightfall crisis.  One of the colony worlds within Kormoran and her cohort’s sphere of responsibility was destroyed and another pillaged, though Kormoran herself did successfully intercept and destroy one Vaadwaur ship before the end of the crisis.

In early 2403, while on a routine patrol, she intercepted a distress call from the USS Appalachia, reporting a pirate ambush; coming to her aid, Kormoran successfully contributed to the defeat of the two pirate ships that had attacked Appalachia.  In light of her subsequent assistance in the destruction of the network of the pirate warlord who had ordered the attack on Appalachia, and considering the agreement between Republic Naval Command and Fourth Fleet Command, Kormoran was then detached from Romulan service for service with Starfleet’s Fourth Fleet, where she today often operates in cohort with the Appalachia.

Lineage

RRW Kormoran is the fourth vessel of her name to serve the Romulan people, and the first to do so under the flag of the Romulan Republic.  The following are brief overviews of the first three Kormorans:

The First Kormoran

Due to gaps in Romulan records and a lack of verifiable Starfleet intelligence data, not much is known about the first Kormoran.  While her year of commissioning is unknown, it is believed that she was an early bird of prey, and that she saw service during the Earth-Romulan War, fought between 2156 and 2160.  The last known records of the first Kormoran indicate that she disappeared while on patrol during the war.  Debris from a Romulan ship was later found in the vicinity of her presumed patrol area, leading the Romulan Star Empire to assume that she had been destroyed by unknown UESPA Starfleet vessels.

The Second Kormoran

The name Kormoran next appears in Romulan records approximately one hundred years later.  This second Kormoran, like her predecessor, is believed to have been a bird of prey.  She appears intermittently in the record for approximately 20 years.  The record suggests that she was considered a reliable servant of the Empire, participating in a number of patrols and periodic skirmishes during her career.  She appears to have been decommissioned by 2273, and likely was scrapped in the following years.

The Third Kormoran

The record is somewhat more clear about the third Kormoran.  It is known that she was a d’Deridex-class warbird, likely commissioned in around 2357.  She saw use during the Dominion War, participating in several battles before the war’s end.  Given the amount of damage she had taken during her career, by 2385 she had been slated for decommissioning and deactivation, a process which is recorded to have been underway when the Romulan sun went supernova. From this point Romulan records are silent, and it was believed that the third Kormoran was destroyed in her berth by the supernova's shock wave. However, more recent information has since corrected that record.

Kormoran, despite being only partially functional and carrying a skeleton crew, was pressed back into service when a group of four transports missed their launch and needed an escort to a Starfleet evacuation hub.  The group escaped Romulus before its destruction, though an engine failure on one of the transports forced the group to impulse while the transport attempted repairs.  Coming under pirate attack, Kormoran held them off as best she could while the transports fled, but suffered critical damage in the battle, including to her warp drive and - unbeknownst to her crew - her comms array.  When towing via shuttles failed, and with rescue seemingly not coming, her crew chose to voluntarily release a fast-acting poison gas within the ship, sparing themselves the slow death of starvation and leaving Kormoran adrift, a derelict full of corpses.  In 2403, her hulk was discovered by her successor, which ultimately scuttled her with torpedoes after recovering her log buoy to serve as a monument to the ship and her lost crew.

Configuration

Main Article: Malem class

Kormoran is, in many ways, a stereotypical representative of her class.  However, she does bear two features of particular interest, which are detailed below.

Command Spaces

Kormoran’s control room is a small place, containing only 3 major consoles - helm, tactical, and operations - beyond the command chair.  Two standing consoles sit at the back, flanking the turbolift door, which are only situationally used either as auxiliary stations in combat or to support signals intelligence operations that require dedicated attention to targeted feeds.

Shuttlebay and Small Craft Operations

Kormoran’s shuttlebay embarks only two small shuttles.  As with all Romulan vessels, these shuttles are able to cloak, should the situation require it.  Additionally, Kormoran carries a series of tracker tags, small devices that can attach to a ship’s hull and feed telemetry data back to Kormoran, allowing her to track targets for a time even after losing them from sensors.  These tags can be deployed either via the torpedo launchers or via the shuttlebay on a case-by-case basis.
