USS Sundiver

From Bravo Fleet

"Living thing, does Entropy, my wicked Aunt, notice our joint conspiracy? Not yet, I think, for you are yet too small. Your puny struggle against her tide is mere fluttering in a great wind. And she thinks I am still her ally."
    —David Brin, Sundiver

USS Sundiver (NCC-82521) is a Lamarr-class Federation starship currently assigned to Fourth Fleet's Canopus Exploratory Flotilla within the Fourth Fleet Operations group. Sundiver is under the command of Captain Lorena Escribano. While Sundiver is an older vessel, built for a different era, she is finding renewed purpose with Starfleet's return to its core mission, supporting squadron operations with her extensive sensor platforms, laboratory space and specialist scientists aboard.

History

Commissioned into service in 2382, Sundiver was at the time one of the most capable scientific research vessels to enter into service. With the evacuation of Romulus and the surrounding systems becoming a Federation priority, Sundiver was tasked with planetary survey work to find suitable colony sites within the Star Empire to support the Romulan population. It was during a full ecological survey of prospective colony worlds, in support of Romulan efforts, that the attack on Mars occurred. When ordered to return to Federation space immediately, the crew of the Sundiver offloaded all consumable supplies they could, handed over the ship's entire complement of probes to local Romulan officials and replicated as much pre-fab housing as they could before departing.

The inward turn of the Federation and the lack of long-duration or far-ranging exploration missions made the Sundiver almost surplus to requirements for the Starfleet of the 2380s and 90s. Internal follow-up survey work, stellar cartography support missions and colony support efforts dominated the ship's activity during this time. With revelations coming out in 2399 that the Attack on Mars wasn't an accident and the Federation's renewal of external operations, Sundiver was ordered to the Avalon Fleet Yards in 2400 for her first major refit since construction. The vessel was in dock and powered down during the Frontier Day crisis, and her reactivation was made a priority in light of fleet losses, returning to service in late 2401, being assigned to the Canopus Exploratory Squadron.
