USS April (NCC-89954) is a Shran-class Federation starship currently assigned to Fourth Fleet. She is named for Robert April, one of the 23rd century's famed captains.
The April is one of the first batch of production model Shran-class vessels launched on service in Starfleet. After a shakedown cruise in the late summer and fall of 2402, her initial crew complement was drawn from the crew of the downed USS Blythe.
History
After being towed to the Shackleton Expanse in early and mid 2402 by the USS Santa Monica the initial crew of the ship was onboarded in the Duwalla system. After 9 days of operating in the Expanse and 3 successful taskings she was redeployed back to the Alpha Quadrant.
The ship, as a designated diplomatic crisis response ship, has a permanently assigned Diplomatic Corps Officer who is also a reserve member of the JAG Corps and qualified attorney. The El Aurian, Commander Aruin, also currently doubles as the ships Records Officer.
The ship was one of less then a dozen that were chosen to take part in a Starfleet pilot project where they were to have small, versatile specialist teams attached aboard.
In Early 2403 the ship discovered the wreck of the Daedalus class USS Trenton on Epsilon Mu 23b, solving a more then 200 year old mystery surrounding the ships disappearance.
In late March of 2403, the ship participated in an operation to round up over 200 dimensionally Displaced fugitives spread across several sector durong the events of the Crossroads Fleet Action. Minutes before completing their mission, the ship suffered severe damage to several key systems and was forced to undergo repairs at a Class 5 Shipyard. In the 5 and a half months from between Late November 2402 and Early May 2403, the vessel travelled over 24000 light years, crossing the Federation from driftward to spinward edge twice in that time.
Configuration
Being the 4th keel laid down, and 9th vessel to be commissioned, the April was able to benefit from some of the teething pains encountered on some of the earlier vessels of the class. One of her forward mission compartments was converted to serve as a semi-permanent probe and buoy launch bay. The other forward mission compartment houses a workbee and several tool and equipment attachments suitable for light field repairs. The rear mission compartments remain modular.
After successfully salvaging the USS Blythe the crew of the April were able to successfully install one of the industrial replicators that had been previously aboard their old ship. It was placed in Cargo Bay 2, and takes up about 1/4 of the bay's floor space. Cargo Bay 3 was converted to serve as berthing and HQ for an attached Starfleet Intelligence ‘In Extremis Team’. This has resulted in the April having roughly 2/5ths of their available cargo space spoken for.
The rear of the enlarged and slightly modified Defiant-class-style bridge contains a 7 foot diameter round shallow salt water pool equipped with flipper and snout friendly waterproof consoles for the use of the ships cetacean First Officer.
