Kovar Prime
Kovar Prime (also known as Kovar IV) is an O-class world located in the Kovar System in the Alcott Sector of the Beta Quadrant. In 2371, the United Federation of Planets colonised the planet to allow over six million citizens to leave their homes along the Cardassian border after the signing of the Federation-Cardassian Treaty.
Since its founding, the colony’s population has continued to grow and by the beginning of the 25th century has become one of the largest multicultural hubs along the Federation-Romulan border.
In 2401, the colony is led by Governor Sean Thompson, a former Starfleet captain.
Overview
Because Kovar is O-class, more than eighty per cent of its surface is water. Since the Federation colony was established, it has become home to many water-based humanoid and non-humanoid life forms. That said, the land settlements have allowed many humanoids to develop their own homes and businesses. Kovar Prime is one of the most successful colonies beyond the Federation’s core territory.
The planet is roughly equal in size to Earth and rotates for twenty-eight Earth hours per day. One Kovar year is equal to three hundred and seventy-eight Earth days.
The colony itself has welcomed numerous species. These include a large contingent of Bolian colonists whose world was bombarded by a massive asteroid, Romulan refugees after the supernova destroyed Romulus in 2387, and, in 2401, Remans who were inhabiting a fragment of Remus.
Kovar is a critical element in local trade and supports many other worlds in the surrounding regions. Numerous freighters are seen entering and leaving the system. The Starfleet-operated Kovar Traffic Control is located on Telus, one of Kovar’s moons, and it monitors everything that enters and leaves the system with precision.
Deep Space 19
For the article, seeBy 2380, Deep Space 19 was constructed in the orbit of Kovar to help defend the colony and local region due to its proximity to the Romulan border. It was also established to support Starfleet's efforts to develop better relations with its neighbours through its deep space exploratory programmes.
Starfleet Academy - Kovar Campus
In mid-2390, Starfleet Academy established a small training annexe on the planet. This extension from the Mellstoxx Campus allowed cadets to train safely on a frontier location. Approximately one thousand three hundred and fifty cadets visit and attend the campus.
Kovar System
The Kovar system boasts numerous resources that have supported its successful development over the past three decades. As a result, many mining operations take place. All of them are civilian-owned but do contribute to supporting Starfleet and its operations in the Alcott sector.
It contains eight planets, all orbiting a G-type star.
- Kovar I - Kovur - B-class planet
- Kovar II - Kovor - H-class planet
- Kovar III - Kovir - N-class planet
- Kovar IV - Kovar Prime - O-class planet
- Kovar V - Kover - K-class planet
- Kovar VI - Tasmar - J-class gas giant
- Kovar VII - Antamar - I-class gas giant
- Kovar VIII - Vkar - Y-class planet
Starfleet has used extensive resources to ensure the system is well protected, especially when it took in many Romulan refugees. Several squadrons of Starfighters are based in the system
The colony government has invested in using a significant portion of its exports in a formidable defensive network spanning the entire system. The Kovar system enjoys robust defences, featuring multiple orbital weapon platforms strategically positioned and an advanced planetary shield grid protecting Kovar Prime.
Several key civilian businesses operate maintenance yards and stations, the largest of which is in orbit around Kovir. Many civilian ships dock here and can pay for reasonable service. Construction docks also exist here, building smaller civilian ships. A large and lavish hotel-based station orbits above Kovir, operated by the well-known Ferengi businesswoman Grand DaiMon Deliaros.
A fragment of Remus, the former Reman homeworld, was pulled into orbit of Antamar in 2401. Starfleet protects it due to the many Reman refugees who reside on it. There are significant deposits of dilithium crystals within it. These are mined by the Remans, who share some of the profits with the Federation and Romulan Free State.
In Play
- Kovar is an idyllic planet swarming with many members from the Federation and, most recently, refugees from the former Romulan Star Empire. All of them are living in peaceful coexistence.
- Its advancement in thirty years is the envy of many other Federation colonies that exist on the far frontier of Federation space. This is due to the vast amount of resources the Kovar system has. Others in the local area speak ill of it but would not say no to visiting or staying on Kovar.
