This article is written for the United Planets of Tellar set in the 22nd Century.
The United Planets of Tellar is the government of the Tellarite people, representing the myriad of worlds they own. A mixed intergovernmental parliamentary confederation, the Tellarite government is one of the most complicated governments in the Alpha Quadrant.
The homeworld of the Tellarites hosts the seat of government in the capital city. As the Tellarites are a race of engineers, their technology is on par with other local powers, including the Andorians and Vulcans. This is mainly down to the fact that between the 2130s and 2150s, all three races spied upon one another. These acts of espionage led to all of them developing similar technology. As a result, the Tellarite Space Administration has established itself as a strong power. Though the Tellarites are not as involved with other species and their own internal matters, the Tellarites are keen traders too. Subsequently, they have many trade routes with other governments in the region. Further providing the worlds of Tellar influence and power.
Historical Conception
Tellarites are renowned for their argumentative approach, stubborn pride and impatience as such many nations on the Tellar homeworld were always in conflict with one another. The Great Global War during the nineteenth century (Earth calendar) ended this with Shallash, the second Tellarite liberator leading his people to victory in unifying their world. Seeing that it was inefficient to continue fighting among themselves, the Tellarite people came together and instead focussed on rebuilding their world with a focus on science and engineering development. This changed how they approached everything, instead of arguing over land and resources, arguments were over the most significant way to develop technology or the latest scientific concept.
The united government was eventually formed in 1885 after several years of negotiation between the many nation-states. It wasn’t long until the Tellarite study of space gave them the inspiration to look beyond their world. Discovering that several other planets and moons in their star system were inhabitable, the Tellarite Space Administration was established by the turn of the twentieth century and before long many of these extraterrestrial worlds were colonised. Eventually, those worlds were placed under the same government and the United Worlds of Tellar started to look beyond their own solar system. It wasn’t long before they had placed outposts and other colonies in nearby systems. The efficiency of Tellarite ingenuity led to this boom. Once contact was made with other races, like the Vulcans and Andorians, the Tellarites were keen negotiators in developing trade routes and treaties. Over the next hundred years, Tellarite freighters became common in the region. Bringing back valuable resources, commodities and technology from other alien worlds.
Tellarite expansion, especially with private businesses, continued into the twenty-second century with many Tellarites taking the liberty to enjoy what the galaxy could provide for them. Many privateers became involved in black market deals with organisations such as the Orion Syndicate and worked as bounty hunters for certain houses in the Klingon Empire. Though none of them was officially affiliated with the Tellarite government, it did cause headaches for Tellarite officials trying to establish their government as a competitive regional power. This only heightened further in 2155 when a long-standing trade dispute with the Andorian Empire almost caused an all-out war. Agreeing to allow the United Earth Commonwealth to mediate between them, the Tellarite government was forced to agree to terms to save the humility caused by their private citizens. However, when it was discovered by United Earth Starfleet that the Tellarites and Andorians were being manipulated by the Romulan Star Empire, the Tellarites agreed to formalise a peace treaty with the Andorian Empire and eventually entered into an alliance with them, as well as Humanity and the Vulcans to end the Romulan threat to the region. This treaty brought a sense of stability that had not been seen. Several months later, and after profiting on many fronts from their involvement with their new allies, a summit was held on Earth to formalise an alliance that the Tellarites were keen to attend. The signing of the Coalition of Planets saw great prosperity for the Tellarite government and its people.
Timeline of significant events and the United Planets of Tellar establishment as a galactic power
- 19th Century: The Great Global War ends and the people of Tellar refocus their energies in unifying their world and rebuilding. Over the next century the stability of Tellar as a united world becomes the focus for everyone.
- Early 20th Century: The Tellarite Space Administration has been formed and the focus on colonising other planets and moons in the Tellar system is a priority. Eventually warp drive is established and the Tellarite begin deep space exploration.
- Mid 20th Century: Contact is made with other civilisations nearby, including the Vulcans and Andorians. Trade and peace treaties are established. Tellarite businesses boom with this new source of income.
- Late 20th Century/Early 21st Century: Tellarite expansion reaches the Beta Quadrant including contact with the Orions and Klingon Empire. Tellarite privateers become quite noticeable, causing some issues for the government.
- Mid 22nd Century: The United Worlds of Tellar is a prosperous power, but merchants and privateers continue to cause unnecessary tension and conflict with other powers.
- 2155: The Tellarite government agrees to formal mediation with the Andorian Empire with the United Earth Commonwealth. Eventually peace is made and relations are formalised. Several months later and the Coalition of Planets, a mutual-defence alliance, is created between the United Earth Commonwealth, the Confederacy of Vulcan, the Andorian Empire, and the United Planets of Tellar after dealing with the Romulun Star Empire’s attempts to de-stabilise the region. Further attacks take place in the 61 Ursae Majoris system and against the Andorian colony on Docana. Eventually one of the Coalitions’ trading partners, the People’s Republic of Coridan, is attacked by the Romulans and the Coalition declares war against the faceless race.
