The Beta Serpentis System is a binary star system near Wolf 359. Relatively unknown and rarely visited, the system includes only a single marginally-habitable world, the class-P Beta Serpentis III, and it lies just far off of major shipping lanes to make it inconvenient. In 2401, Fleet Admiral Allison Reyes and Polaris Squadron discovered that the colony had become entangled with old Borg technology from the Battle of Wolf 359, and after the conclusion of the crisis, the colony was placed under the stewardship of Federation Colony Operations.

}}The Bortasqu-class dreadnought is the current flagship of the Klingon Defense Force fleet and the largest vessel ever fielded by the Klingon Empire. Originally conceived along with the Mat'Ha-class raptor as the next generation of Klingon warships to birth from the lessons of the Dominion War, the Bortasqu' took several decades before it finally came to life. Now, in the 25th century, very few ships can stand directly against a Bortasqu' one-on-one in combat.
Exploration and Science
Much like the Negh'Var-class before it, the Bortasqu' was developed as a multi-purpose ship with several things in mind. One of those was deep space exploration and scientific capabilities. While no match for even an outdated Starfleet Galaxy-class starship in terms of scientific capabilities, the Bortasqu' does host a state-of-the-art sensor suite that is more than capable of handling nearly any spatial phenomena encountered.

History
Diplomacy
As the flagship class of the Klingon Empire, the Bortasqu' will often be the ship sent for any diplomatic functions with allies or enemies alike. Due to its size, the ship is capable of hosting hundreds of dignitaries if required and has entire sections of the ship dedicated to ambassadorial-style guest quarters and large auditorium-style conference rooms. The Bortasqu' is well equipped for any manner of diplomatic summit.

Following the Battle of Wolf 359 in 2367, Starfleet Command commissioned a covert research program to study the remnants of the destroyed Borg cube. The Beta Serpentis system was selected due to its proximity to Wolf 359. This project involved the creation of Salvage Facility 21-J, a research and salvage depot hidden within the troposphere of the class I gas giant Beta Serpentis IV, and a small colony on Beta Serpentis III to support operations. The program was shuttered in the early 2380s, but the Andorian colonists of Beta Serpentis III chose to remain.
Engineering
The Bortasqu' is an immense vessel that is more complex than the average Klingon design tends to be. The new generation of warp engine design that was built for the Bortasqu' allows the vessel to generate considerably more power than previous Klingon designs. This allows the ship to channel primary power directly from the warp engines, through the spine of the ship, and into the "head" area where the ship's main weapons platform is located including the main forward disruptor cannons and the siege disruptors.

In the late 2380s, the colony on Beta Serpentis III threatened to leave the Federation due to the Synth Ban, as the colony was highly dependent on synths for its workforce. Ultimately, the colony did not succeed, but the decade that followed was incredibly difficult on the colony's residents.
The complex intermix of the Bortasqu's interaction between the ship's weapons and engines requires that a full-time engineering staff of hundreds of warriors is required to constantly monitor and maintain the systems.

Borg Crisis of 2401
Tactical
Tactically, the Bortasqu' takes nearly every cue from the Negh'Var. The ship is equipped with four heavy disruptor cannons in the front of the ship, flanked below by two siege disruptors intended for stationary targets. Along the ship's hull are twenty disruptor cannons that can cover every arc of the ship in battle.

In June 2401, Polaris Squadron received a distress call from Beta Serpentis III, but the colony insisted that they did not send it. The USS Ingenuity was sent to investigate. When they arrived, they discovered the colonists had become Borg worshipers looking to bring about the assimilation of the galaxy. After resolving a situation where the colonists took their crew hostage, purging the colony of Borg technology, and stopping an ill-fated attempt to summon the Borg to their system, Polaris Squadron rounded up the key perpetrators and handed them over to Starfleet Security, while the colony was placed under the stewardship of Federation Colony Operations.
Unlike the Negh'Var, the Bortasqu' is more adept at utilizing its four fighter squadrons, double the Negh'Var, in combat with a combat center in the ship specifically for coordinating with the fighter squadrons. With two massive hangar bays on both sides of the "neck" of the ship, the Bortasqu' also deploys Kivra-class shuttles and To'Duj-class fighters adopted from the elder Negh'Var.

See Children of the Borg for detailed proceedings.
Shipboard Life
Much like the Mat'Ha-class, the first of the new generation of Klingon ships post-Dominion War, the Bortasqu' takes a different approach to life onboard. Most lower decks crew are still packed into dorm-style accommodations, and troops are packed even higher into barracks-style accommodations, there are far more single occupancy rooms for officers and above. Additionally, the Bortasqu' has over a dozen holo rooms throughout the ship, several recreation rooms, and dozens of dining halls. Like the Negh'Var, the Bortasqu' also has a single Great Hall at the belly of the ship capable of accommodating hundreds of warriors at once.

Binary Star Pair
In Play
At the center of the Beta Serpentis system is a detached binary star pair with an A-type main-sequence star and a smaller K3 V red dwarf. The separation distance and relative mass of the pair cause the planets in the Beta Serpentis system to move on wide, but consistent ellipticals.

Beta Serpentis III Colony
clear

Beta Serpentis III is a class P glacial planet with year-round sub-zero surface temperatures and a lanthanide-rich inner crust that scrambles transporter targeting sensors. Described as a frozen hellscape by most, it hosts a small colony of Andorians who were on the initial project team for Salvage Facility 21-J but were unwilling to leave when the project was shuttered.

Due to the lack of interest in the system since the decommissioning of the Borg research program, the infrastructure of Beta Serpentis III has fallen into significant disrepair. Polaris Squadron carried out an initial refit and resupply of the colony in June 2401 following the Borg crisis, and the colony has been flagged by the Federation Colony Operations for additional support missions going forward.

Beta Serpentis IV and Salvage Facility 21-J
Beta Serpentis IV is a class I gas giant notable for its dense ammonia atmosphere and aggressive storm activity. These characteristics led Starfleet to select the planet's troposphere as the site of Salvage Facility 21-J, a covert research and salvage depot where they planned to dissect and analyze the remains of the Borg cube destroyed at Wolf 359. Salvage Facility 21-J was decommissioned in the 2380s, and since then, it has been maintained by automated systems.

In June 2401, it was discovered by the USS Ingenuity that Salvage Facility 21-J had been corrupted by Borg subroutines and that its synths had been weaponized. After the Borg subroutines were purged by the Advanced Science, Technology and Research Activity, it was resolved that a fully automated model for maintaining a station full of Borg technology was a bad idea, and the facility is now managed by a small team from Starfleet Security and Starfleet R&D.
