Vega System
The Vega System is an inhabited star system in the Alpha Quadrant located approximately 25 light years from Sol. It is home to the Vega Colony, one of the earliest Earth colonies established. Today, it is a bustling metropolis of the Federation, with a largely but not exclusively human permanent population - but as a key hub for trade routes heading for the coreward reaches of the quadrant, its transient population is vast, diverse, and quickly changing.
Overview
Vega was settled by Earth colonists in the early 22nd century, and quickly gained importance as a frontier trading outpost due to its proximity to a variety of small, friendly local powers. When the Federation was founded, Vega was integral to efforts to reach out to worlds like Draylax and Rigel and bring them into the fold as part of the Federation’s first century of diplomatic expansion, all while continuing its significance in trade. Anything headed for the Core Worlds from the coreward side of the Alpha Quadrant flowed through Vega.
The main colony itself is built on Vega IX, but settlements have expanded across the entire system. Vega IX itself is the biggest trade hub, but most shipping or commercial enterprises of the Federation have set up offices or facilities within the system, sometimes comprising whole complexes on quiet moons, to act as local bases or even corporate headquarters. The system also boasts one of the largest civilian ship maintenance facilities in the quadrant, Waqi Landing, hovering over the gas giant Vega VII, with the vast traffic of commercial ships needing space to dock, repair, and resupply.
In Play
- As a huge trade hub, Vega sees hundreds of thousands of visitors every day, largely on business. It has some of the densest flight traffic of any system in the Federation, and its settlements are filled with a hugely diverse transient population.
- Shipping and commercial enterprises often have a local or even corporate headquarters in Vega. This is still the Federation, though - Federation law applies. These may be people with their own interests, even greeds, but this is not a cyberpunk location where the corporations rule.
- Vega can be a good place for starships to find information from the transient populace or from corporate offices about travellers through the quadrant or objects being shipped or traded.
