The Steamrunner-class heavy frigate is a compact, multirole Starfleet vessel designed to undertake patrol, diplomatic support, scientific, and exploratory assignments throughout Federation space. Developed in the 2350s as Starfleet sought new vessels to assume many of the duties historically performed by the aging Miranda II-class, the Steamrunner combines broad mission capability with a relatively small, self-sufficient spaceframe. Its modest crew and resource requirements allow the class to operate efficiently across a wide range of routine missions without the logistical demands of larger cruisers.

Science and Exploration

While lacking the depth and breadth of the science facilities found aboard the outgoing Oberth-class and incoming Nova-class survey vessels, the Steamrunner was intended from the outset to successfully undertake general exploratory and scientific missions as part of its multirole brief. The class includes four configurable science laboratories and a dedicated astrometrics laboratory on Deck 4. These laboratories are supported by a full suite of scientific sensors, supplemented by data from enhanced navigational and long-range sensor arrays located in both the primary hull and aft-mounted deflector pod.

In line with the original design brief for the Steamrunner to fulfill multiple mission profiles, limited diplomatic facilities are provided on Deck 3, including several well-appointed staterooms, two small conference rooms, and a private dining and reception suite.

Engineering

The Steamrunner-class spaceframe has a unique design consisting of a broad primary hull containing the majority of the vessel’s systems and a separate navigational deflector pod situated aft of the primary hull and connected via the port and starboard warp nacelles. The nacelles themselves are angled both to minimize the tactical profile of the vessel during combat and to benefit from the significantly improved engine efficiencies provided by this configuration during extended flight at speeds above Warp 8. The separate navigational deflector pod is accessed by a heavily shielded single-width companionway running the length of both nacelle cowlings.

The class-7 warp drive is maintained from main engineering on Deck 6, with direct connections to both warp nacelles and the paired impulse engines positioned on the trailing edge of the primary hull. Deuterium is stored in twin tanks occupying space between Decks 6 and 7, while antimatter is stored under magnetic containment on the lowermost Deck 8, allowing it to be forcibly ejected away from the vessel in the event of catastrophic containment failure. Likewise, the entire matter/antimatter reaction assembly can be ejected through the ventral axis in the event of a warp core breach.

The Steamrunner-class heavy frigate has a standard cruising speed of Warp 6 and a maximum speed of Warp 9. An emergency speed of Warp 9.5 can be sustained for approximately 12 hours, after which engineering repairs are required at the earliest opportunity.

Tactical

While not intended to serve as a dedicated combat vessel, the multirole nature of the Steamrunner’s mission profile requires the class to be capable of defending itself and vessels under its protection. Threat simulations conducted during the class’s development indicated that, due to the Steamrunner’s minimal profile, three Type-IX dorsal phaser arrays mounted on the primary hull and a single forward-mounted photon torpedo launcher would provide adequate defensive armament. Experience gathered during early operations subsequently led to this loadout being increased and the existing arrays upgraded.

The vessel’s low profile also allowed designers to maximize the protection of several key systems. The main bridge module nestles in the center of the broad primary hull and is afforded significant protection by the raised aft superstructure of the saucer section and the large Bussard collector cowlings to port and starboard. Similarly, the main navigational deflector mounted at the stern of the vessel is screened from attack by the angled warp nacelles.

Auxiliary Craft Facilities

Two separate shuttle bays are located at the trailing edge of the primary hull across Decks 6 and 7. Each shuttle bay is equipped with a single Type-9 shuttlecraft, two Type-18 shuttlepods, and one workbee, with both shuttle bays supported by a shared repair and maintenance facility.

With a standard crew complement of 120, the Steamrunner-class is equipped with substantial recreational and communal spaces, including a large mess hall, gymnasium, two holodecks, an aft observation lounge, and an expansive forward recreation and observation lounge large enough to accommodate the entire crew for briefings or celebrations.

Quarters assigned to the commanding and executive officers are located on Deck 3 due to their proximity to the bridge, while department heads and officers of lieutenant rank and above enjoy the privacy of individual quarters across Decks 4 and 5. Junior officers occupy shared quarters with a colleague, as do all enlisted crewmembers. Quarters assigned to engineering officers and crew are located on Deck 6, providing convenient access to the main engineering and its support functions.

All crew members have access to a well-equipped medical suite overseen by the ship’s chief medical officer and counselor.

The Steamrunner-class History

By the mid-2350s, the Miranda II-class frigates that had become ubiquitous throughout Starfleet were increasingly falling behind contemporary designs in several areas. Rather than develop another single class to assume the Miranda II class's extensive mission portfolio, Starfleet began introducing a new generation of specialized and multirole vessels capable of taking over portions of its responsibilities. Development of the Steamrunner-class heavy frigate began in late 2358, with prototype hull NX-52135 laid down at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in 2362.

Spaceframe trials commenced in 2367, but development was halted that year following Starfleet's devastating losses to the Borg during the Battle of Wolf 359. Several classes then under development, including the Steamrunner-class, Akira-class, Norway-class, and Saber-class, were reviewed and modified to improve their survivability in combat. Development subsequently resumed, with NX-52135 completing her shakedown cruise during 2370. In early 2371, the lead ship was commissioned as USS Steamrunner, NCC-52135, and production of the class commenced.

During the earliest skirmishes with Dominion vessels ahead of the Dominion War proper, it became evident that three dorsal-mounted phaser arrays were insufficient. Existing vessels were hurriedly retrofitted with an additional two Type-X phaser arrays, while the original arrays were also upgraded to Type-X standard, and a second forward torpedo launcher was installed directly above the first. These modifications were deployed ahead of schedule when USS Appalachia and USS Hiroshima were dispatched from Utopia Planitia in 2373 to take part in the Battle of Sector 001. Following the successful performance of these two Steamrunner-class ships, the modifications were incorporated into all future construction.

Although the Steamrunner assumed many of the patrol, scientific, and exploratory duties historically performed by the Miranda II-class, it was never a complete replacement for that highly versatile design. The introduction of the Reliant-class frigate in 2389 provided Starfleet with a more direct successor to the Miranda II, while Steamrunner-class heavy frigates continued to serve throughout the fleet because of their smaller size, comparatively low construction costs, and modest operating requirements.

The Steamrunner-class In-Play

  • A Steamrunner-class ship is best thought of as a "jack-of-all-trades" within Starfleet. It does not have the tactical capabilities of a Manticore-class or Defiant-class, the speed of an Intrepid-class, or the scientific facilities of a Nova-class, but it is more than capable of operating in all of those fields.
  • Although no longer a "new" design, Steamrunner-class vessels are still found at the forefront of Starfleet operations across the galaxy. Their relatively low construction and operating requirements mean that large numbers remain in service, undertaking a wide variety of missions.
  • This class is a good choice for a character's first starship command, whether they hold the rank of commander or captain. The crew would likely include newly graduated junior officers, established officers taking their first department-head or assistant department-head assignments, and experienced Starfleet veterans in both commissioned and senior non-commissioned roles. The wide variety of missions available to a Steamrunner makes it possible to bring together characters from very different career backgrounds.
