Andorian System
The Andorian System, also known as the Procyon system or the Alpha Canis Minoris system, is the home system of the Andorian Empire in the United Federation of Planets. This binary star system features several planets, primarily gas giants, with numerous orbiting moons. One of these is Andoria, the homeworld of the Andorian and Aenar peoples. As a founding member of the Federation, the Andorian system ranks among the many advanced star systems within the inner core territories of the Federation. It is eleven light years away from Earth and is located in the Alpha Quadrant.
Overview
The moon of Andoria orbits the gas giant Andor and is the capital world of the Andorian Empire. Steeped in a deep, rich history of honour by showing strength, the Andorian Empire was an influential nation both politically and militarily before the formation of the Federation. Known for its advanced military in the 22nd century, the Andorian Imperial Guard still exists today to protect Andoria and its interests alongside Starfleet. Many of the Imperial Guard’s starship designs resemble those used from the 22nd century with modern adaptations. The Andorian Laikan Military Academy supports and trains all new officers of the Guard and provides further outreach programs for Starfleet Officers. Andoria has been one of the sources and suppliers for the Federation’s advanced weaponry and defence development.
Andoria is a frozen world; most of its civilisation lives underground, where huge cities are built. Using geothermal energy sources gives these cities and the Andorians power and a reasonable level of warmth. The cities are connected by interconnecting tunnels, or, in the past, these settlements were travelled via ice-cutters that could circumnavigate the world. In the 25th century, most Andorians use transporters or shuttles to move around the planet.
Those who visit Andoria can climb some of the highest mountains in the Federation and see the impressive underground settlements. Andorian art is also well sought after, and the Andorian Academy for the Arts is one of the finest institutes in the Federation. Many also visit Andoria during the winter seasons to watch the Ushaan Tournament. Though this sport has developed and changed over generations, it is well-spectated.
By 2402, the Andorian system is one of the most heavily defended locations in the Federation, thanks to the massive defence force maintained by the Andorian Imperial Guard. Many Andorians who remain in the home system (and the nearby star systems like Weytahn) see it as an honour and duty to serve the Guard to protect the home system. As a result, the Imperial Guard is well-staffed and resourced. A number of shipyards, maintenance docks and stations are scattered across the system. Starbase 7, a Spacedock II-class station sits in orbit of the gas giant Andor, coordinating all of Starfleet’s operations in and around the Andorian Empire.
In Play
- Andoria, like other core founding worlds, is vastly developed. Imagine the idyllic scenes of Earth in freezing temperatures.
- The Andorians who live in the home system uphold many traditions compared to those who leave to explore the galaxy. That said, serving in either Starfleet or the Imperial Guard is seen as an honourable career choice.
- Andoria, as one of the Federation’s weapon and defence technology developers and manufacturers, makes it a viable target. During the Dominion War, its strategic importance was on par with many other critical locations across the Federation, such as Earth, Vulcan and Berengaria VII.
