USS Artemis is a Federation Obena-class emissary assigned to Arcturus Wayfinding Squadron of Starfleet's Fourth Fleet.

Namesake

Artemis is ultimately named for Artemis (Ἄρτεμις), the Greek goddess of the hunt, the moon, and young women.[1] Throughout history, there have been multiple oceangoing vessels, spacecraft, and starships named Artemis. Along with several Obena-class emissaries which derive their name from pioneering spaceflight programs (such as Dragonfly, Opportunity, Archimedes, and Mercury), this iteration of the starship Artemis traces its name to the Artemis Program, a set of early 21st century spaceflight missions conducted by the United States of America's NASA that led to the first permanent base on Luna.[2]

History

Artemis was one of the last starships launched Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in 2385, just days before the yards were destroyed by rogue synth forces. A symbol of Starfleet's hope for a brighter future, Artemis was pushed through an abbreviated shakedown cruise in just six months to take her place in a hurried, Federation-wide diplomatic campaign to reassure nervous member worlds by showing the flag. She continued in this role throughout the rest of the 2380s and 2390s. In mid-2401, she entered Avalon Fleet Yards for her first comprehensive refit, which came on the heels of battle damage sustained during Frontier Day that year. Relaunched in 2402, Artemis was assigned to Arcturus Squadron.

The most recent Federation starship to bear the name Artemis was the Ambassador-class USS Artemis (NCC-50532).[3]
