Deflector Shields are force fields that protect vehicles from damage.

Graviton Shields

Graviton shields are a basic form of deflector shield that use graviton fields to protect a ship from many forms of energy. When they are struck by energy weapons or kinetic impacts, their power diminishes. When a shield has been completely depleted, the system must then recharge. These shields are found on freighters and other non-combat ships.

Multi-Spectrum Shielding

Multi-spectrum shielding is an advanced shielding type consists of several forcefield layers modulated to specific energy spectra, allowing the shields to absorb or reflect a wide variety of energy sources more effectively. This technology was developed to counter the Borg's ability to adapt to shield frequencies, and debuted first on ships like the Akira and Intrepid. It remains the standard design for most Federation starships.

Regenerative Shields

Regenerative shields were the most advanced shields available to Starfleet during the Dominion War, and were incorporated into the designs of combat-oriented designs such as the Prometheus-class and Sovereign-class, the principal of their operation being that a limited amount of the energy they absorbed could be channeled back into the capacitors to allow them to maintain their integrity in drawn-out firefights. This technology was also used by Cardassian weapons platforms as was considered impenetrable by conventional means, due to the presence of a large generator supplying the platforms with power from the surface.
