There are many species in the United Federation of Planets.

Founding Member Species

Andorian

Overview
The Andorians are a warp-capable humanoid species from the moon Andoria, capital of the Andorian Empire. In 2161, their homeworld became a founding member of the United Federation of Planets. They are quite tall and strong compared to Humans, and their distinctive blue skin and antennae make them easily recognizable.

Andorians In-Play
  • Unlike most humanoid species, the Andorians have four sexes, two analogs to female (zhen and shen) and two analogs to male (chan and than). Keeping in mind that sex and gender are separate, the two most common genders are women and men—someone may describe themselves as a zhen woman or a chan man. This incorporates ideas created for several Pocket Books novels, extrapolated from Data's comment in TNG: Data's Day that four partners are necessary for a successful Andorian joining.
  • As a founding race, Andorians are very common in Starfleet. Due to their race's martial history, they are often expected to be found in tactical and command roles.
  • While Andorians thrive in polar conditions, they seem to do just fine on starships and starbases at standard temperatures. Their colony worlds, though, would be expected to be icy.
Naming Conventions

Andorians often have names that are quite long, and they are addressed by a shortened version in conversations with non-Andorians. An Andorian's second name is usually appended with a prefix indicating the individual's gender and sex: sh'/zh' for women and ch'/th' for men, though this is not obligatory.
