Starbase 315, code-named Caelum Station, is a Jupiter-class station located in the Deneb Sector. It is currently under the command of Fleet Captain Damhnait Oland. As an annex of Starfleet Medical Academy, Caelum Station is a teaching hospital providing professional studies and field experience for medical and counseling officers.
The station was constructed in 2364 as a research outpost in the Shangris system. In early 2401, the station was occupied by the Dominion Lost Fleet and its sensor array was sabotaged by its crew to prevent further use by the Jem'Hadar to monitor Starfleet movements. Given increased instability on the Breen Confederacy border and the Federation's commitments to rebuild the Deneb Sector, the station was towed spinward of Farpoint Station and redeployed with its new mission.
History
Originally commissioned as Shangris Science Station, in 2364, Starbase 315 was constructed as a research outpost in the Shangris system in the Deneb Sector. The station served as the central hub for most of Starfleet Science’s efforts within the Alpha Quadrant frontier. A majority of its population was Caitian at launch, due to its close proximity to Cait. For decades, it hosted many conferences and a range of research projects in collaboration with Starfleet, Federation and non-Federation scientist alike.
When the Dominion Lost Fleet captured the station in 2401, its ample sensor array was redirected to scan and monitor Federation territory to observe Starfleet's movements across the sector. Its use by the Dominion served a major blow to Starfleet operational security. Much of the crew and civilian population resisted the Jem'Hadar occupation of the station, sabotaging the station's sensor arrays.
Given significant damage to the station and monumental loss of life, the station was recomissioned as Caelum Station and redployed spinward of the Breen border.
