"Qui audet adipiscitur"
   —Ship's Dedication Quote

The Endeavour (NX-06) was the sixth NX-class to be launched by the United Earth’s Starfleet. The ship was launched on December 30th, 2155 from the orbital facilities above Earth prior to the start of the Battle of Sol during the Earth-Romulan War. She was named after the space shuttle craft Endeavour. The ship’s motto was in Latin and meant Who dares win.

In late 2156, almost a year since her launch, the ship was later refitted and upgraded to the Columbia-class. Unfortunately the war with the Romulans had a significant impact on the crew of the Endeavour, where many of its crew were either killed in the line of duty or were transferred for their expertise/experience to other postings to assist with the war effort. As a result of this, in its first year alone the ship had gone through numerous changes on the senior staff.

History

Construction

Endeavour NX-06 under final construction at the San Francisco Shipyards, 2155.

The Endeavour was built at the San Francisco Orbital Complex in Earth orbit. Construction had started by late 2153, at the height of Starfleet realising it needed to deploy the NX-class into the field at a faster rate than originally planned. This was due to the Xindi conflict proving that more was needed to defend Earth and the rest of the Commonwealth.

By the time the yard engineers started on Endeavour, they were well versed in knowing what to do right and what to avoid to prevent technical issues. The whole assembly project was led by Captain Krischnan Demetriou, a Greek Starfleet officer who had trained as a pilot as part of the NX Project. Putting the Endeavour together was relatively simple and by December 2155, the ship's primary systems were almost at one hundred percent operational efficiency.

2155

Battle of Sol

On December 30th, the Romulan Star Empire launched a daring attack against the Sol system in a bid to deal a crippling blow to Earth's Starfleet. However what the Romulans hadn't anticipated was how quickly a defending force could be assembled by Earth along with the fact that the Earth Global Defence Force had almost two years since the Xindi attack to prepare the system for further incursions. Though Starfleet was victorious, the battle did cost Earth and its allies (Vulcan and Andorian ships arrived at the eleventh hour to secure the system). One of the heaviest costs was the damage sustained to Endeavour and the loss the crew endured from those who were killed during the battle.

When orders had been issued for a fleet-wide tactical alert, Captain Demetriou had decided to launch Endeavour ahead of schedule to assist with the fleet being assembled in orbit of Mars. Not wanting to be left in dry-dock he took the gamble to join the Challenger and the others due to the fact that a majority of the ship's systems were operational and ready, even though he was missing half of his crew and two decks did not have life support operating. Joining the fleet, the Endeavour was instrumental in taking out a number of Romulan attack fighters. Taking a brunt of the fight, the ship eventually succumbed to heavy damage. The ship's warp core had to be shutdown before it breached, several explosions in engineering killed a number of crew members including the chief engineer. Furthermore, the ship was bombarded by two Romulan Birds-of-Prey which resulted in the ship receiving massive hull breaches. Challenger was able to drive off the attackers, but Endeavour was left adrift after the bridge was hit hard. This caused several explosions which ended with the bridge being exposed to the vacuum of space, killing Captain Demetriou and his first officer, the only two officers on the bridge.

Shortly after the battle, the ship was salvaged and returned to dry-dock.

2156-2157

Endeavour shortly after its relaunch in January, 2156.

Repairs on the ship immediately began after the battle was concluded, with many that had survived requiring medical treatment. Feeling that it was vital for the Commonwealth's interest to get as many ships repaired and sent out, Fleet Admiral Hathaway (the Starfleet Commander-in-Chief) briefed a number of Starfleet captains and senior officers on a plan that would see this through. One of them was prioritising officers that could receive battlefield promotions to fill in any missing gaps within the fleet's command structure. Hathaway decided that Demetriou's successor needed to be someone who was battle-tested and was used to the NX-class level of technology; her choice was Commander Oliver Campbell, the first officer and chief helm officer of the starship Poseidon (NP-01). Promoted to captain, Campbell was given a simple instruction: to assemble a new crew and get the ship launched within a fortnight. Completing both tasks with some ease, the ship was relaunched and sent out as part of the task force to reinforce Starfleet forces at Deneva.

The Romulans had attempted to destroy Deneva a few months prior but their attempts failed, however they were persistent with their efforts and launched another offensive. Their target had been the many mining facilities on Deneva's asteroid belt; it was believed they were attempting to stop the resources that were being excavated from reaching the rest of the Commonwealth as Starfleet used them to construct its fighting force. The Second Battle of Deneva, was once again, a victory for Earth but Endeavour along with every other vessel that survived the battle endured a high amount of casualties. This did not bode well for the crew's morale. Once the system had been secured, the ship had been sent to receive further repairs and new crew from Starbase 1.

Captain Oliver Campbell, making final diplomatic overtures with the Kreetassan government, c.2156.

Reaching the newly built station in orbit of Berengaria VII, Endeavour was repaired and given its new set of orders: to establish diplomatic ties with the Democratic Union of Kreetassa. It was the hope of the Earth government that this would lead to an alliance being signed, possibly bringing the Kreetassans into the Coalition of Planets and the war effort. Hosting Deputy Defence Secretary Lucca Whelan, the crew travelled to Kreetassa and upon arrival found the Kreetassan military in mid-battle with the Romulans. Aiding the Kreetassans against their mutual enemy, the Endeavour was successful in driving off the remaining Romulan forces. Their actions of coming to the aide of the Kreetassans assisted hugely in the crew's efforts to form a favourable diplomatic approach. Talks between both sides started off well and Captain Campbell would go on to develop a good relationship with Chancellor Manazol, the head of state and government for the Kreetassan government. Thanks to this, as well as other diplomatic overtures made by Campbell the crew were successful in not only formalising a relationship but having the Kreetassan government sign an alliance treaty. Chancellor Manazol and his governing body saw the threat the Romulans posed and pledged to join Earth in its struggle to fight the Romulans. Though the Kreetassan fleet was heavily damaged from the attack, where they could assist the Kreetassan military would support their Human allies. This mission was a huge morale boost for the crew, with Campbell and others receiving several recommendations for their efforts.

Returning to Starbase 1, the Endeavour found that the station had been attacked by the Romulans. Their enemy had also landed a garrison of cannon fodder troops on Berengaria VII, to once again interfere with the mining operations there. Endeavour was able to save the station and save the miners on the planet before the Romulans detonated a series of thermo-nuclear warheads, thus destroying the mines. Sadly for the crew they lost a number of their MACOs and others who had been sent to the planet to rescue the miners. Endeavour would remain docked at Starbase 1 for the next few weeks while Starfleet and the Kreetassans sent back-up and relief efforts. By the end of March 2156, the Berengaria system was fully secure with Starfleet assigning a permanent defence force and several orbital weapon platforms. This was a critical beachhead for Earth with its war against the Romulans as it secured a strong and safe habour for future attacks. Starfleet had decided that it wanted to take the offensive against the Romulans and ordered Endeavour to begin a scouting mission by a nearby star system where they believed the Romulans had a staging area.

The closing moments of the Battle of Devron, (April 5th 2156).

While en-route, the ship suffered from a serious computer malfunction which resulted in it being left disabled for a few days before the crew were able to fix the problems. Thankfully they were not detected by the Romulans and were able to complete their scouting mission on the Devron system. They discovered the existence of a Romulan base being built within one of the moons. If it became operational it would give the Romulans the ability to have a repair yard close to Kreetassa and other allied worlds. Believing that this was the right target for them to attack, Starfleet invited the Kreetassans to join the fight. On April 5th, 2156 (First Contact Day), the joint Starfleet-Kreetassan task force launched their attack and were successful in destroying the moon and wiping the Romulan presence from the system. After the Battle of Devron, where he was awarded the Starfleet Medal of Valour, Oliver and his crew became a well-oiled war machine. The ship started to gain a reputation for itself that rivalled those of their fellow NX-class sister ships.

In May, at the Battle of Nelvana, Campbell had tricked the Romulans into thinking that Starfleet had established a beachhead on the third planet by placing a probe on the planet's surface. The probe emitted false readings, appearing to send signals from a concealed base. The Romulans had sent eight ships into the system to remove the apparent forward base. Not expecting to find a hidden Starfleet task force waiting for them, the Romulans were outgunned two-to-one and were completely obliterated. The impact of this battle later resulted in another Coalition victory a month later, where the Earth colony on Altair VI was successfully defended. The Romulans, thinking they could have another go at taking the planet, had not expected to find a joint Earth-Andorian-Tellarite task force waiting for them at Altair. As such, after losing ships at Nelvana and now, once again out-gunned, found themselves having to be quite ruthless to damage their enemies. Once again Endeavour led the combined coalition forces to victory, however the battle resulted in a majority of the Andorian and Tellarite forces being lost. This high cost resulted in both sides withdrawing from supporting the defence of other worlds that were not part of their own states. Also during the battle, the portside hull plating of the Endeavour was melted off by a salvo of nuclear warheads. Captain Campbell was injured and spent two weeks recovering from this.

Endeavour NX-06 on convoy duty in 2156.

During the summer of 2156, Endeavour was assigned to convoy duty. Its mission, along with a handful of other Starfleet ships, was to protect the many transports and cargo vessels being used to evacuate the smaller colonies in the Commonwealth that lacked any real defence systems. Operation: Fortress Earth had been created by President Littlejohn, where she had signed an executive order where a large number of Earth's forces would be withdrawn from outlying regions to assist in the defence of the Sol system and other key colonies. The mass evacuation of the smaller colonies required a combined effort of Starfleet and the Earth Cargo Service (that had been hired to assist with the operation). Thankfully, Endeavour was successful in any engagement during their escort efforts. No civilian life was lost, but in its final mission to evacuate the colonists on Draken IV, Endeavour arrived too late, finding the Romulans destroying the colony from an orbital bombardment. Enraged that they would decimate civilians so carelessly, Campbell ordered his ship and task group to attack the Romulans. Though he was victorious, the win for Starfleet came with a cost. Endeavour was heavily damaged and had to be towed back to Earth. The shame of one of Starfleet's finest ships arriving in the tractor was a crippling blow to troop morale as much as it was to Campbell's.

Deciding that Endeavour would undergo its refit ahead of schedule, Starfleet ordered the Endeavour to be dry-docked for the next four months. Campbell, along with a handful of his crew, were kept on to oversee the overhaul and repairs while others were given temporary reassignments.

2157-2158

Captain Burton and First Lieutenant Trommler, undercover on Akaali.

Now a Columbia-class starship, the Endeavour left the Copernicus Shipyards on Tuesday 1st February 2157. The ship was given a two day shakedown cruise to allow the crew time to adjust to the upgrades and refits. Originally the ship was ordered to rendezvous with a convoy but the ship intercepted a Romulan message coming from Akaali. The Romulans had copied the efforts of Malurian criminals in mining the planet's rich veridium ore. The crew went undercover and performed a covert operation that resulted in them removing the Romulans from the planet as well as ever from being able to return to mine the planet.

Design & Layout

Just like her sister ships, the Endeavour followed in a similar configurations as the other NX-class ships. The internal colour scheme was originally of different shades of navy blue and grey. Just like Challenger, the Endeavour had carpet laid out in the centre aisle of each corridor and within each room.

A majority of the systems that were installed on the Endeavour were tried and tested systems when it was launched, however after the Battle of Sol it would on occasions suffer technical issues during its missions. These were finally resolved by the time of its refit at the end of 2156.

Again, like the Challenger, the ship was heavily armed with the best weapons and defence technology on offer to Starfleet. Her hull armour was thicker and her phase cannons could throw a heavier punch. This allowed the ship to last longer in battles.

When the ship was upgraded and refitted to Columbia-class specs, the additional space provided by its secondary hull meant more space in the primary hull for crew quarters and provided the ship with more power.

Bridge

NX-06 Bridge

Located on Deck 1 (originally A deck), the Endeavour's bridge shares the same layout like her sister ships. At the centre, on the highest elevated section is the captain's chair. To the left of it is the captain's own personal command console, giving the captain (or officer on watch) the ability to access the ship's computer systems in an instant. Around the edge, following on to the left of the captain's chair is the science station. Here the science officer on duty can access the ship's sensors and other scientific equipment as well as the ship's database. The communications console sits before the science station. Access to the subspace radio and the ship's universal translator allows for smoother discussions between the ship and outsiders. Almost parallel to it is the engineering and operations stations. If the Chief Engineer is not present on the bridge, then another engineering officer is present and is able to rely to the captain any issues with any of the ship's systems. Behind it is the armoury station, from here weapon's control and internal sensors for security purposes can be found. In the centre of the bridge is flight control. Originally just one officer manned this but after developing countermeasure against Romulan technology that could override a ship's systems, especially the conn, Starfleet separated this station into two: navigation and helm. By separating the two it meant that one person would have to input the ship's navigation points and direction heading while the helm officer piloted the ship to its destination.

Aft the bridge is the ship's situation room, which allows for some of the crew to discuss any mission specific issues. One lift serves the bridge while access to the bridge can also take place via the various access hatches and crawl-ways between Decks 1 and 2.

Ready Room

Captain Campbell's ready room.

The captain's private sanctuary located on the starboard side of the bridge. The refit to the ship provided the captain with a much wider and bigger ready room. It gives the captain the opportunity to host smaller meetings with two or three officers/visitors. The captain also has access to a private bathroom which includes a toilet and a sink to freshen up with.

Captain Campbell's dog, Paddington, can sometimes be found resting in here while the captain is on duty.
