Each unit in Starfleet, whether a starship or station, has a complex command structure, with each member of the crew being assigned a position in a department within the three divisions of Starfleet: Command, Operations, and Science. This category includes descriptions of all departments found aboard most ships and bases. Individual position descriptions are found in each department's article. Commanding Officers have a wide degree of latitude when it comes to determining the structure of their unit, and so these positions can vary to meet the specific needs of a particular ship or base.

Command Division

The division color for command: red.

The Command Division is denoted by the color red, and includes the unit-level departments of Command, Flight Control, and Strategic Operations. Other more specialized departments also included within this category but which are not strictly speaking part of this division include the Judge-Advocate General's Corps and Diplomatic Services.

Operations Division

The division color for operations: gold.

The Operations Division is denoted by the color gold, and includes a wide variety of departments related to the safe operation of Starfleet's many assets, and at the unit level departments in this division include Operations, Engineering, Security, Tactical, Intelligence, and Communications. On starships, Communications is often subsumed to Operations, and Security and Tactical are combined into a single department. Intelligence likewise might be represented by only a single officer, housed under the umbrella of command.

Sciences Division

The division color for sciences: blue.

The Sciences Division is denoted by the color blue, and includes Science, Medical, and Counseling departments, all of which are tied to Starfleet's core exploratory and humanitarian missions. The Science department itself may have many sub-departments on larger ships and bases, while Counseling might itself be considered a sub-department of Medical, depending on the ship or station in question.
