The name Excelsior has a proud history in Starfleet in its various incarnations, and this one is no different. USS Excelsior (NCC-42037), last under the command of Captain Jason Hawk, was unfortunately lost with all hands at the Frontier Day celebrations in orbit over Earth in April 2401.
If history is any indication, this will not be the last ship to bear the name Excelsior.
