Class Information

Yorktown NR-01, on patrol

In 2144 it had become obvious to the Flag Officers of Earth's Starfleet that the aged Daedalus class was in need of replacement. To that end a design brief was sent out to various ship yards for a large Explorer capable of a cruising speed of warp four and capable of undertaking deep space exploration and tactical missions. In March of 2146 a design was selected and later that year in a brief ceremony the keel was laid for what would eventually be the Yorktown. The NR-01 Yorktown was launched from dry dock in January of 2151 and after a five month shake down cruise the vessel was commissioned while in lunar orbit.

The Yorktown class followed a similar design as the Daedalus class it was meant to replace. A primary hull and Secondary hull layout. The Yorktown deviated from the Daedalus design with a saucer shaped primary hull and a external deflector dish mounted to the forward most point of the engineering hull. The two hull sections were arranged with the primary hull above and slightly forward of the secondary hull with an supporting neck between the two where the twin nacelle pylons were mounted.

Lexington NR-04, under attack during the Earth/Romulan War

The Yorktown class is equipped with a full range of the sensor systems and science labs needed to carry out a wide range of exploration and discovery oriented missions as is expected for a ship that was primarily meant as a deep space exploration vessel. Also these ships were equipped with both Phase cannons and Photonic Torpedoes. There are six phase cannons mounted to the dorsal surface with another six to the ventral surface of the primary hull. There was a phase cannon mounted to the dorsal surface of the secondary hull just above the shuttle bay and the remaining two are mounted to the ventral surface of the secondary hull. One cannon was mounted near the forward end and the other near the aft end of the secondary hull.

Many ships of the Yorktown class saw action during the Earth/Romulan war operating along the front lines of the conflict with at least three of ships of this class being present at the Battle of Cheron. After the war the deep space operation capabilities let the ships of the Yorktown class being tasked with patrolling the newly formed neutral Zone.
