The USS Redemption (NCC-78240) is a Sovereign-class exploratory cruiser assigned to the Fourth Fleet under the command of Captain Taviel Daragon. Part of Endeavour Squadron, operating out of Gateway Station in the Midgard Sector, the Redemption is the designated Tactical and Command ship of the formation. In practice, as a decades-old workhorse cruiser, she is responsible for much of the ‘flying the flag’ operations in the Midgard Sector, conducting outreach to local powers and offering humanitarian support. Her mere presence is enough to dissuade most local troublemakers, who could not begin to challenge the might of a Sovereign-class, and her tactical value is otherwise reserved for crisis situations or a Starfleet intervention into aggression by a nearby warlord. As a well-rounded and powerful ship, she is the designated flagship if squadron leader Commodore Rourke takes the field, and otherwise remains close to the frontier to demonstrate Starfleet’s commitment to the interests of both sides of the border.
Design and Layout
As part of the wave of Sovereign-class ships built after the Dominion War, the Redemption has received multiple upgrades and refits over the course of her quarter-century of service. These improvements to her systems and components keep her as competitive as a ship of her age can be with vessels of the 25th century. She has, however, retained most of the same aesthetics she held when originally built: decks are carpeted, the upholstery and fixtures retain rich, warm colours, though she does not share the outright opulence of larger explorers such as the Galaxy or Odyssey-class, with a more utilitarian presentation. Her captains have, over the decades, sought to preserve this appearance; once, it represented the height of Starfleet's power, while now it remains symbolic of a bygone golden era.
Bridge
The Redemption retains the same bridge layout and design she bore upon launch. The design moves away from the tactical arch made popular by the Galaxy-class, with the command chairs positioned independently in the centre, the commanding officer's at a slight elevation. The seat to the captain's right is reserved for the executive officer, while the left is for guests and mission advisers. Under Captain Daragon, squadron leader Commodore Rourke often takes that seat when aboard. While previous bridges had many consoles, if not most, flush with the bulkhead, the Redemption has the most key positions at stand-alone work stations, including Science and Tactical.
