Background

On the surface, the USS Ajax appears to be nothing more than a platform for Intelligence Gathering. Her "official" mission was the gathering of data on the Cardassian Union and Romulan Star Empire.

In reality, however, the true mission of the Ajax is quite different. The Ajax was, in fact, the first Starfleet Vessel commanded by a Section 31 agent. The Ajax's true mission is to conduct various clandestine Black Ops missions within the Cardassian and Romulan Space for the good of the Federation.

Strategic Operations Group

The Strategic Operations Group is the official Paramilitary branch of the civilian run Federation Intelligence Service. Officially sanctioned by the Federation, the SOG is a highly classified and deeply buried but nonetheless official project within the FIS. The SOG acts as the military arm of the FIS on sensitive and dangerous mission.

The SOG is an elite team that focuses solely on combat. Its members hold no rank or station and recruited into the Group from varying backgrounds, however most have prior service in Starfleet or the Marine Corps

On the Ajax, the SOG act as the primary strike force for the Covert Ops missions.

History

The Original USS Ajax (NCC-11574) was a Federation Apollo class]light cruiser in service to Starfleet in the early to late 24th century. The starship was named in honor of the Greek legendary hero Ajax.

During the mid-2320s, the Apollo-class Ajax was commanded by Captain Narth, and in 2327, Ensign Cortin Zweller I was assigned to the Ajax following his graduation from Starfleet Academy.

In 2329, Cortin Zweller I stopped a Tzenkethi saboteur on the Ajax. Afterwards, Zweller was approached by the Section 31 agency.

In 2364, the Ajax was one of several Federation starships that were chosen to receive enhancements to their warp drives by engineering specialist Kosinski and his aide, the Traveler. After their tests were completed, the Ajax's chief engineer noted a rise in engine effieciency. It was later revealed that the effect was direcly related to the Traveler and had nothing to do with Kosinski's new warp equations.

In 2368, the Ajax was one of 23 starships that formed part of a tachyon detection grid, when Captain Jean-Luc Picard established the network along the Klingon-Romulan border in order to expose the Romulans' involvement in the Klingon Civil War.

In 2369, the Ajax was performing a deep space exploration mission into Sector 21396.

In 2380, the original Ajax was de-commisioned

In 2385 a newly built Steamrunner Class vessel was given the title of U.S.S. Ajax and assigned a new number NCC-69112.

In 2386, Commander T. Malcolm St. Cloud was assigned as new CO of the U.S.S. Ajax.

In 2387, the USS Ajax disappeared and was presumed lost with all hands. She was replaced by the Wallace Class USS Ajax the following year.
