The Triangle Region is a non-aligned territory that lies at the intersection of the borders between the United Federation of Planets, the Romulan Star Empire and the Klingon Empire. While several claims have been attempted over the years, none have stuck, both because of opposition from the other bordering powers and because the region has proven more trouble than it is worth/

History

Historically, the Triangle Region has historically been a stronghold of the Orion Syndicate, a loose collective of pirates, racketeers and smugglers, dating back at least to the 20th century.

During a period of Klingon expansion in the 21st century, the Empire laid a claim to this region of space. However, given the decentralized nature of the Orion Syndicate and other parties in the region, the Klingon Defense Force was unsuccessful in suppressing dissent and, when internal struggle overtook the Empire in the late 2140's, any claims they had to systems beyond Khitomer, Yacae, Kah'las and Narendra were abandoned. Their interest in the region returned towards the end of the 22nd century, but as tensions heated up with the Federation, their efforts never met with enough support to successfully tame the region.

In the mid 23rd century, the Romulan Star Empire, previously in seclusion, suddenly became more aggressive in its expansion. The Romulan Star Navy violated the Neutral Zone to attack Federation outposts, staged incursions into Klingon Space, and attempted to lay claim to this volatile region of space. However, forced to pull back their assets from the Klingon border after a harrowing defeat by the Klingons at the Battle of Klach D'Kel Brakt, they too abandoned claims to the this region.

A series of treaties, first the Khitomer Accords of 2293 and then the Treaty of Algeron in 2311, defined borders between the United Federation of Planets, the Romulan Star Empire and the Klingon Empire. An outgrowth of this was the formalization of this region as one that was not aligned with any of the three powers at the summit.

In the early 2300's, Starfleet commissioned several outposts along its border with this region of space. The Jupiter-class Starbase 828 was placed in orbit around Hethas Prime to monitor the Klingon Empire along their border with the Federation and the Triangle, and a base was built with similar purpose in the Draken system to monitor the Romulan Star Empire. As pirate activity from the Triangle continued to leak into Federation territory in the mid 2300's, Starbase 400 was commissioned in the Kaleb system along the middle of the Federation's border with the Triangle.

From 2380 until 2387, the Triangle was part of Task Force 86's area of operations. However, given the enormous task of managing the entire length of the border with the Klingon Empire, the Gorn Hegemony and the Tholian Assembly, when the Fourth Fleet modified Task Force 93's area of operations in September 2387, responsibility for the portion of the region along the Romulan border was redelegated to Task Force 93.

Disposition

The Triangle Region is a lawless region of space with a heavy presence of pirates and smugglers. Given its centrality to neighboring powers, it is also an area of trade and diplomacy, with landmarks such as Starbase 400, Algeron and Khitomer used to host negotiations between the United Federation of Planets, the Romulan Star Empire and the Klingon Empire.

Two once-Federation outposts exist in the region, Starbase 101 and Starbase 102. Despite their names and affiliation, neither are actually administered by Starfleet. Instead, they were commissioned by a consortium of business interest from Earth, Andor and Vega in the middle of the 23rd century. Starbase 101 is alternatively known as Smuggler's Cove, Starbase 102 is also regarded as Pirate Haven. Given tensions between various pirating interests in the region, including the Orion Syndicate, both bases have fallen into complete disrepair. The Federation has no notable influence on either starbase anymore. Starbase 101 is administered by a group of civilians that interact more closely with the lawless elements of the Triangle than their Federation origin, and, following an attempt by Starfleet to stage a clean up of the region from Starbase 102, it was completely overtaken by the Orion Synidicate.

Besides these outposts, several other landmarks dot the Triangle.

  • Meja's Nebula is a vast nebula with a composition that disorients conventional sensors. It has thus become a hiding place for shady dealing, and an opportunistic group of individuals set up the Kodis Base within the nebula to administer this business, one where anything is fair base so long as the price is right.
  • Jaressi Centre is located near Starbase 101 and is a heavily-fortified Orion Syndicate stronghold used for illicit trade and trafficking.
  • Peloi is a neutral outpost on the edge of the Triangle between the Romulan Star Empire and the Klingon Empire. It has been used by daring Federation merchants to trade with both neighboring powers, although the trip is fraught with danger as it requires crossing between the Syndicate-rich region of space between Pirate Haven and Jaressi Centre.
