Class Description

Travel Pod 5 leaving the orbital office complex

The travel pod was used in the 2270s and 2280s as an orbital transfer vehicle. These travel pods were designed to only operate in the orbit of a planet and was not capable of successfully landing on or taking off from a planet's surface. The pod was primarily used for personnel transfer between ships and stations located in a planet's orbital environment but due to the large open area in the pods interior it could also be used to transfer cargo also.

Travel pods were boxy craft with a rounded forward end. The forward end of the pod is dominated by a large view port that gives the pilot and passengers an unobstructed view. The aft end of the craft is taken up by the aft hatch and docking ring. The docking ring allows the pod to dock with the docking ports built into the stations and ships. The pods were equipped with large flood lights along the front end of the pod that were located just below the view port. The pods were also equipped with an array of RCS thrusters for flight control and also act as the pod's primary propulsion system. The pods had an emergency hatch built into the ventral surface of the pods hull.

The interior of the pod is a single compartment with the control console at the forward end of the compartment. This console was set up with the standard pilot and copilot arrangement but the pod could and most often was operated by a single pilot. and two benches of passenger seating located along the port and starboard bulkheads.

To protect the pod from micrometeorites and other small objects that could be encountered in the orbital environment the pod is equipped with a low level graviton shield. These pods were not equipped with any form of weapons systems.

Other Notes

  • The travel pod is mainly used to transport personnel and materials between facilities and ships in orbit of the same planet.
  • The travel pod has no planetary landing abilities. The propulsion units are not powerful enough for the pod to return to orbit from a planet surface.
  • The travel pods shields are low level navigational shields meant for protection from micro meteorites and other small objects found in planetary orbit.
