Current State of Affairs

Discovery of The Gradin Belt

Main Article: Epatha Gateway
Main Article: The Gradin Belt

The Epatha Gateway and The Gradin Belt were directly and indirectly discovered by the crew of the USS Equinox.

The Epatha Gateway is an “unstable wormhole” that has reached a level of quantum equilibrium, and so one end flirts between various zones and in different times, while one end remains fixed. While the wormhole is largely unstable it is termed, “predictable” and “semi-stable” as the fixed end is linked to the gravitational effects of a binary star; the same binary star that the planet Aether orbits. The gravitational effects of the binary star has created an anomaly by which the Epatha Gateway opens near the planet Aether every nine (9) days (1day : 27 hours on Aether) leading to the an area of space in The Graden Belt, an area of space virtually equal distance from Hirogen, Malon and Turei space. The wormhole opens outside this nine (9) day window and paths have largely been unknown. However, probes have revealed that these random openings lead generally still lead to multiple sectors contained within The Graden Belt (99.1%), while the other (0.9%) is largely a mystery. It is believed that travel can lead to alternate timelines and distances unknown. Travelling though the Epatha Gateway is relatively safe during cycle times.

The Gateway is close to Aether the world that is ruled by The Ghemawat Realm who control this area of space and allow few to pass. They have a starbase situated on the entrance to the system where Aether is so that any approaching their world must first identify themselves. Few were unaware of the Epatha Gateway until the USS Tlax found it in the system. The Ghemawat now have ships guarding the gateway to prevent incursions into their realm as well as to prevent people from using it without their knowledge or permission.

The Gradin Belt is the expanse of space accessible by the Epatha Gateway which is located near the planet Aether in the TRT. Epatha Gateway has allowed for further exploration along a path the USS Voyager once traveled on their journey home over a decade ago. It allows connections with races and governments that would otherwise take years to reach via traditional transport from the TRT. Since its discovery it now opens the possibility of some of the races making appearances in the sector of the TRT. This is a semi-stable wormhole where the terminus is secure and stable around Aether but the other end could come out in different locations, often in The Gradin Belt. The Gradin Belt is thousands of lightyears long (but can be traveled in roughly one year at high warp). It contains a number of very different planets and spacial phenomena. There are many races as well that call this belt home.

Exploration of The Round Table

Main Article: The Round Table
Main Article: Battle of The Round Table

The TRT technically does not have boundaries: it is the entire explorable space reachable from the Solaria Gateway, an Iconian Gateway positioned in the Delta Quadrant. However, for the purposes of cartography and record-keeping, the TRT consists of all space within ten thousand light-years (10,000 ly) of the collapsed Solaria Gateway. The TRT Round Table is thus sufficiently large that no current Federation vessel, starting from the Gate, could reach any edge of the theatre within one year, even traveling at uninterrupted maximum warp. (The total volume of the TRT exceeds 4.1*10^13 cubic light-years, promising a vast new frontier of exploration for decades to come.)

The region of the galaxy containing the TRT is almost completely unknown except for a region known as, “The Jathlin Arm.” The TRT is fifteen thousand light-years beyond the furthest known edges of Hirogen, Vaadwaur, and, most recently, Borg expansion. Except for the limited exploration Starfleet has performed in the area, no data is available except a few long-range quasar charts and the results of major galactic stellar surveys, and incomplete records retrieved from Borg vessels and other ships they were able to board and download computer records from.

Task Force 38 established a limited presence in TRT, with a number of small research stations and a few large exploratory missions prior to 2388. In that year, reports of increased Borg activity in the Round Table zone were received and a Task Group was dispatched to bolster Task Force 38. The Borg began their incursion shortly after, laying waste to Starbase 900 and many Starfleet vessels. Following the destruction of the Gateway by the USS Excelsior, the area is now home to a scattering of Federation and Starfleet personnel, based out of Forward Operating Base Anchorage.

Other Species & Powers

Starbase 38

Main Article: Starbase 38

Abandoned by the Kartelan almost a hundred years ago, Starbase 38 was originally designed to act as a defense and early warning platform to aid the Kartelan people in their struggle against the once mighty Vaaudwaur and the Hierarchy. But with the Vaadwaur long since gone and the Hierarchy concentrating their efforts elsewhere, the Kartelan entered an era of peace and prosperity and their government abandoned the station. With their military long since disbanded by the time the Vaadwaur awoke in 2376, the Kartelan have struggled to defend their borders in recent times against a renewed threat they deemed long gone. The sudden, somewhat timely arrival of Starfleet ships in 2388 provided the Kartelan with a protector at last. In return for agreeing to protect the interests of the Kartelan people, Starfleet were given permission to assume control of the abandoned station, establish a permanent Headquarters and fortify the system against the threat of the Vaadwaur. Augmented with Starfleet technology from a downed Excelsior-class starship, Starbase 38 as it is now known, once again serves it purpose; to protect the Kartelan sector.

Treaties

Main Article: Treaties

  • Kartelan Protectorate Agreement: Signed by the Federation and the Kartelan Sovereignty. Establishes a permanent Starfleet/Federation presence on the moon of the second planet in the system in return for Starfleet agreeing to work with and protect the Kartelan people from their foes.

Task Force History

Main Article: Task Force 38 Timeline

Task Force 38 began life in 2357, following the armistice that ended the last of the major Cardassian Wars. Then known as “Detachment 38,” codenamed Avalon, the five-ship task group was dedicated to first contact and diplomatic support, representing Starfleet’s initiative to resume peaceful operations following the bloody conflict with Cardassia. A shared resource between Starfleet and the Diplomatic Corps, Avalon’s work was only occasionally high-profile, but the results of its missions—which had one of the highest success rates in the fleet—were felt throughout the Federation. D-38 was responsible for the first treaties with Altair VI and Aldea, negotiated the Peace of Donatus, and oversaw the Bolian and the Cairn’s respective applications to join the Federation (both of which were successful). Avalon also instituted and oversaw the Officer Exchange Program between 2359 and 2366, when it turned the program over to the Diplomatic Corps.

In December 2375, a number of Federation scientists and officials in charge of the Union III Iconian excavation efforts bombarded the coordinates of a chroniton disturbance with a high concentration of warp plasma and deuterium. A wormhole popped open. With scientists proving the wormhole to be stable, Starfleet successfully made contact with the F’hoca Sector of the Delta Quadrant. After months of frantic and painstaking research, it was determined that the wormhole, dubbed Union Gateway, was stable, artificial, and Iconian in design. It was the first of several Very Large Gateways (VLGs) that would be discovered and over the next decade and more, Task Force 38 would become Starfleet’s continued presence in the Delta Quadrant. Since the wormholes discovery, Starfleet has shifted its operations to The Round Table.

By 2386, travel to the Delta Quadrant was conducted by Iconian Gateways which were starting to enter into a state of decay. Due to the limited amount of knowledge the Federation had about the up-keep of the gateways, a decision was made to replace them. By 2387 the Federation Transwarp Network was deployed with one of the first linkups going directly to the Delta Quadrant. By order of the 4th Fleet command, all Iconian Gateways were destroyed and replaced by the transwarp network. To stay clear from any subspace interference from the former Iconian Gateway and to give the transwarp gate adequate protection, the Delta Quadrant gate was built in the Mordred Nebula, a significant distance away from Task Force HQ, Starbase 900. Starfleet were forced to rethink their strategy in the Delta Quadrant in mid 2388 when the Borg launched a surprise incursion in a bid to access the Federation Transwarp Network. In order to protect the Federation, the USS Excelsior destroyed the Gateway in the Mordred Nebula and the remnants of the Task Force successfully defeated the Borg. Scattered and cut off, the senior commanders of the Task Force setup a base of operations on Helios Colony and, later, FOB Anchorage.

Sometime later, the Epatha Gateway and The Gradin Belt were directly and indirectly discovered by the crew of the USS Equinox. An “unstable wormhole” where one end flirts between various zones and in different times, while one end remains fixed, the wormhole opens near the planet Aether every nine (9) days (1day : 27 hours on Aether) leading to the an area of space in The Gradin Belt, an area of space virtually equal distance from Hirogen, Malon and Turei space. The Gradin Belt is thousands of lightyears long (but can be traveled in roughly one year at high warp). It contains a number of very different planets and spacial phenomena. There are many races as well that call this belt home. The Epatha Gateway has allowed for further exploration along a path the USS Voyager once travelled on their journey home over a decade ago. It allows connections with races and governments that would otherwise take years to reach via traditional transport from the TRT.

Back in the Alpha Quadrant, Starfleet Command announced the formation of Delta Resettlement Operations, codenamed Project Outreach. This Project was created to reach out to the lost souls of the Delta Quadrant following the Borg attack on the Round Table. At the behest of Starfleet Command, Vice Admiral Mitchell Hanson of Starfleet Tactical assumed oversight of the project and assembled a five-ship task group to carry out the project. The USS Solaria, an Intrepid-class vessel commanded by a veteran of the fleet, Captain Thalek th’Zorati, served as the lead ship of Project Outreach. Using a new form of Quantum Slipstream Drive, the Solaria and other vessels assigned to the project began their journey to the last known coordinates of Task Force 38.
