Soyuz Dorsal View

In 2236 the Advanced Starship Design Bureau put forth a design brief for a new ship class that would be optimized for long rage sensor operations. This ship design would require a ship that could linger in one location for extended periods of time to carry out sensor based observations of areas of space the federation can not inter due to safety or political reasons.

Several designs were returned to and reviewed by the ASDB the chosen design was single hull design with four long range sensor pods with each pod held at the end of support pylons. One pod was held above the ships hull and another was located below the ships hull and was held between the ships warp nacelles. The other two pods were held so one was on port side and the second on the starboard side of the ships hull. Another set of long range sensor arrays was located on the ventral of the ships hull just forward of the lower sensor doom.

Along the sensor systems the ships of the Soyuz was equipped with a full complement of science labs and could carry out multiple research projects. There were also three shuttle bays and could house up to nine shuttles.

The ship dosing now called the USS Soyuz entered construction at the Antares Shipyards in 2238 and after a short shake down cruise the ship was officially commissioned in 2240. Soyuz class ships soon proved to be exceptional for mapping missions in newly discovered sectors of space. During the 2240s and 2250s the Soyuz class was a fixed presence on the Federation / Romulan boarder. The Sensor capabilities of the Soyuz class ships made them perfectly suited to monitor Romulan Space on their side of the Neutral Zone.

Ships of the Soyuz Class saw action during the Conflict with the Sheliak, the Klingon wars of 2256/2257 and 2267. In each conflict the Soyuz class ships saw little actually combat and instead were used primarily as long range observers tracking enemy movements and relaying intelligence data to Starfleet Command so that Command was better able to properly plan strategy.

While the Soyuz were not used as front line combat vessels they were still well amend and when required to do so could successfully protect themselves. The ships were equipped with three dorsally mounted and three ventrally mounted dual emitter phaser banks. There were also two forward and one aft facing torpedo launchers.

By 2282 the Soyuz class starting to show its age due to advancement in ship design and sensor technology and the Soyuz was slated for decommissioning. In 2287 the last of the Soyuz class ships were returned to the Antares Shipyards and decommissioned.
