Graviton Shielding System
While the Cardenas Class was under development the decision was made to construct a smaller ship that would primarily focus on Exploration. To this end the original design of the Cardenas that had originally been rejected by the Advanced Starship Design Bureau was handed off to a design committee made up of personnel from the Antares Ship Yard. After two years of work the modified design, now called the Shepard, was returned and accepted by the ASDB.
Construction of the USS Shepard was begun in 2237 and in 2245 the Shepard left the ship yards for a shake down cruise and while the dorsal phasers were found to be operating below acceptable perimeters no other major problems were found. The Shepard returned to the ship yards and once the problems with the dorsal phasers was corrected a second set of phaser tests were undertaken and passed. The Shepard was officially commissioned in 2246.
The overall design of the Shepard was a standard one of a primary and engineering hull with a pair of warp nacelles. The primary hull was saucer shaped and the engineering hull extended aft from the primary hull and the warp nacelles were located at the ends of pylons that were arranged so the nacelles were held above the ships hull. At the aft end of the engineering hull was the ship's twin impulse engines with the shuttle bay located between them.
Ships of the Shepard Class were primarily designed as explorers but could undertake mission of a tactical nature. This was due to the offensive and definitive systems of the ships. They were equipped with duel emitter phaser banks arranged around the outer hull to provide full 360 degrees of phaser coverage. There was a single torpedo covering the forward firing arc and a single torpedo covering the aft firing arc. The ship was protected from enemy weapons or other hazards by a Gravitation Shielding System.
There was a full complement of short and long range sensors and science, medical, and engineering labs to allow the ships of the Shepard class to carry out missions of exploration and scientific research.
Ships of the Shepard Class were most often found to be operating near Federation borders and were primarily tasked with missions in space just beyond Federation borders were they would undertake long term missions to open up new areas beyond those borders to exploration and study.
The first real test of the combat capabilities of the Shepard Class came in 2256 at the battle of the Binary Stars, were four ships of this class took part and all but one survived. Shepard Class ships saw continued combat action during the war. Like all other Star Fleet ships of the time the Shepard Class saw multiple losses were normally these ships would have seen victory or at least a draw due to the new cloaking device that was in use by the Klingons at the time. When a way to counteract the cloak was found the Shepard proved to be the equal of the ships of the Klingon Empire.
Once the war was over the Shepard Class returned to missions of exploration and discovery. During the process of rebuilding the fleet several Shepard Class ships were constructed. By 2320 the Shepard had fallen behind the newer ships in capabilities and the decision to decommission the class in favor of newer ships. The last Shepard Class in active service was returned to the Antares Ship Yard and decommissioned in 2326.
