Class Description

Class Design Brief

USS Portsmouth mapping the Cashmere Nebula

The Shelley Class has the primary hull, secondary hull and twin warp nacelle arrangement that is common for Starfleet ships. The overall design of this ship is similar to the Excelsior Class and the Refit Constitution Class with the major deference being the away the hull sections are arranged. The primary and secondary hulls are connected via a neck that extends from the aft ventral surface of the primary hull to the dorsal mid-section of the primary hull. This arrangement leads the forward third of the secondary hull extending beyond the forward edge of the primary hull.

The warp nacelle pylons extend from the port and starboard most ventral surfaces of the primary hull had hold the nacelles so they flank the secondary hull. These nacelles are roughly equal in length to the secondary hull. The Shelley class is equipped with four impulse engines. Two of these engines are housed within the dorsal aft section of the primary hull. The remaining two engines are housed in the aft section of the neck just below the connection point between the neck and the primary hull.

The Shelley Class has two shuttle bays. One is a forward facing shuttle by that is housed at the forward most dorsal section of the secondary hull with the second is aft facing and is located at the aft section of the lower decks of the secondary hull. Between these two bays the Shelley Class can carry a shuttle load out of up to twenty shuttles. This class is also well armed with at total of eleven Type VIII dual emitter phaser banks mounted to the outer surface of the ship's hull giving the Shelley Class a full 360 degree phaser coverage. This class has a total of six torpedo launchers with two of these launchers housed within the forward edge of the ship's neck, two housed in the forward section of the secondary hull, and the remaining two housed under the ship's fantail section of the secondary hull.

Class Service History

USS Curry after a battle with Dominion forces in 2374

In 2282 Star Fleet put out a request for a ship design capable of carrying a shuttle complement grater than any ship currently in operation. Multiple possible designs were submitted by shipyards across the federation. In 2286 the design for the USS Shelley was chosen by Starfleet and sent back to the Beta Antares Ship Yards for final design revisions. The completed design was reviewed by Starfleet in 2287 and construction was started in 2288.

Construction on the USS Shelley was completed in 2292 and the ship was launched on a shake down cruse. This cruise pinpointed the need of additional phaser banks on the secondary hull to cover blind spots in the ships phaser coverage. Also modifications to the ship's shuttle bays were identified that would lead to the ability for the USS Shelley to recover, service and then relaunch its full complement of shuttles in under ten minutes. In 2293 the Shelley returned to dry dock for the needed modifications and relaunched in 2294 after a second short cruise the Shelley was commissioned in 2295 and construction was started on more ships of this class.

The large complement of shuttles allowed the ships of the Shelley Class to handle missions such as system mapping and colony establishment in a more efficient manner that other ships in the fleet. While the ships of the Shelley Class were never front line ships they proved themselves as second line ships that were well suited to handle missions within the borders of the Federation. During times of conflict with other powers such as the wars fought between the Federation and Cardassian Union in the 2340's and 2350's where the ships of the Shelley class used their shuttles to support ground operations and to support larger ships in fleet battles. These conflicts would lead Starfleet to revisit the idea of ship's fighter craft being part of a ships auxiliary craft complement. and would eventually lead to the development of the Peregrine Class fighters.

While the Shelley Class performed well during the repeated conflicts with the Cardassian Union, The Galen border conflicts, and the Tzenkethi war they were starting to show their age. As development of the Peregrine Class continued it became evident that a newer Carrier would be needed. Several Shelley class ships were damaged beyond repair or totally destroyed during the Dominion War and in 2375 with the war over the Shelley Class was mothballed and as newer carriers like those of the Akira Class entered service the operating Shelley Class ships were decommissioned. In 2384 the last operating Shelley Class vessel was decommissioned and the class was officially retired.
