Class Description

In 2355, the decision was made to finally decommission 2 classes of starships by 2365, both of which had an exemplary service run in Starfleet. The Oberth class science vessel and the Miranda class frigates had been in service for the better part of a century, and ultimately could not compete with newer and more advanced technologies being released with newer designs.

The Advanced Starship Design Bureau at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards was tasked with designing replacements for both of these vessels, while maintaining the same role mandates that the original craft held. Many designs were presented and summarily rejected, for many reasons. The two classes had not only prestigious records, but sentimental attachments to many of the officers who had served on them.

Late in the year 2366, Commander Thomas Moorehead had the idea to look at a design that had been declined previously; one of the "Pathfinder" details for the Defiant class. Following the trend of sea-faring navies to use the same hull design for multiple roles of vessels, Moorehead proposed two distinctly similar vessels that would perform entirely different roles.

The Oberth’s replacement would go on to be the highly successful Nova class design, which has since become one of the most commonly used science vessels throughout the fleet. The Miranda’s replacement would go on to be called the Rhode Island class.

The Miranda’s replacement however, needed a few additional modifications. The housing for the secondary deflector array at the forward point of the primary hull would be filled in with internal spacing for crew quarters and other necessities. While this mandated a much smaller array, it provided a much needed boost in internal spacing across those four decks. Due to her multi-role need, many areas devoted strictly to science were sacrificed to add additional armaments and defensive systems. As compared to her Nova class sister, the Rhode Island comes with 4 Type X phaser arrays in addition to 7 Type IX arrays. These 4 advanced arrays are positioned on the primary hull, for better defensive and offensive capabilities. While there was unfortunately no space that could be sacrificed for additional torpedo launchers, the torpedo manifest was able to be significantly increased, and the Rhode Island can carry 25% more torpedoes than her Nova sister. The Rhode Island would also come equipped with the more advanced Multi Layer Shielding System present on ships of her role and size.

Moorehead presented this idea to his superiors, and while they were expecting two very different classes to replace the two they’d decommissioned, they could not find any fault with his design specifications. Both designs, the Rhode Island and the Nova, were approved for production in 2369.

Whereas the Nova would be assigned missions related to planetary surveying, secondary contact missions, and things of a more scientific nature, the Rhode Island could realistically be deployed anywhere a large starship simply could not be spared, and perform a variety of mission profiles. Like the Nova, the Rhode Island also comes with a Waverider shuttle, a subatmospheric craft capable of mach speeds. This adds a great deal of versatility to the small compliment of auxiliary craft on the Rhode Island class.
