With the venerable Oberth class showing its age civilian science facilities through out the Federation began to express interest in a replacement science vessel. A joint venture between the Antares Shipyard, Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, and the Advances Starship Design Bureau was undertaken to design and built such a replacement. After a design phase of five years the final design of what would be called the Raven Class was started at the Antares Shipyard in 2339. In 2341 the Raven was commissioned after a round of systems tests within the Antares system and a shake down cruise of three months.

In 2355 the USS Raven passed through the Romulan Neutral Zone and failed to return. In 2374 the wreckage of the Raven was discovered crashed and partly assimilated on a planet in the Delta Quadrant by the crew of the USS Voyager. Inspite of this the Raven class has

The Raven class was a boxy, rugged, and easily maintained design that quickly proved to be as effective as a science vessel as the Oberth it would eventually replace. The Raven class is designed to operate with a crew of 24 but can be operated by a crew of as few as two. Due to the small size of the Raven class the ship has the capability of landing on a planets surface. This allows the ship to support ground base operations for an extended period of time for minimal energy and material expenditures.

To make the most of the internal volume of Raven class ships the impulse engines were housed in the pylons that supported the warp nacelles. This allowed the inclusion of a shuttle bay that was large enough to house a single shuttle.

As the Raven Class was meant to operate well within Federation borders there were no armaments built into the design but it was equipped with a single probe launcher that allows the ships to carry and launch a wide variety of probes.
