Class Description

Class Design Brief

Looking down on Starbase 10

The Pulsar class stations are arranged with a large docking ring around a central core. While the core is one single unit it can be broken into three main subsections the Upper core, Cargo facility, and the Lower Core.

The upper section of the core spans the first 242 decks of the station. At the dorsal most point of the core is the upper communications array. This section also houses the station’s command center and station operations offices. The Sector command offices are also located within this section of the core. Three of the stations four computer cores are housed within the upper core along with four of the stations shuttle bays. The stations medical complex including sickbay and the medical research labs are located within this section and span a total of ten decks. Housed within this section of the core is the stations security complex that spans a total of six decks. The security complex includes the brig, armory, security training facilities and briefing rooms. The science complex takes up another ten decks and has extensive research facilities and can handle multiple ongoing research projects. The upper core also houses the crew and civilian quarters along with the recreational, shopping, and dining facilities.

The Docking ring is located around the lower third of the upper core area and is connected to the core by a series of eight crossover bridges that are five decks tall spanning decks 226 to 230. The bridges are equipped with physical isolation doors at the points were they connect to the core and the docking ring. The docking ring itself houses the stations ship yard offices along with fabrication bays dedicated to ship yard operations. There are sort term stay quarters located within the docking ring for the use by personnel awaiting for a ship to carry them to their final destination or crews of ships that are undergoing repairs at the station that require part or all of the ship to be evacuated. The docking ring also houses short term storage bays for cargo awaiting transportation to an off station location. large Deuterium tanks, two antimatter generators, and antimatter storage tanks are also housed within the lower decks of the docking ring that are used to resupply the ship's docked at the station and the station itself as needed. Docking with the station is provided by eight docking arms located along the outer edge of the docking ring directly opposite the cross over bridges. Each docking arm is able to provide docking for two star ships allowing a total of sixteen ship to dock directly to the station.

Covering decks 243 through 265 of the stations core is the cargo facility. This facility houses not only the supplies for the station but emergency supplies held at the station in readiness for rapid deployment to the systems with in the sectors surrounding the station.

Below the cargo facility is the lower core and this section spans decks 266 through 338. Shuttle bays five through eight are located in this section as is the stations fourth computer core. There are multiple fabrication bays located in this section that are dedicated to the repair and maintenance of the station. Along with these fabrication bays there are multiple cargo bays dedicated to the storage of raw materials for use in the fabrication bays and storage of spare parts for use in the maintenance and repair of the station. This section also houses the stations four fusion rectors and the primary power distribution manifold. At the ventral most point of this section is the stations lower communications array.

Class Service History

With the formation of the United Federation in 2161 and the formation of the UFP Starfleet came the need for dedicated orbital facilities. A committee of engineers and orbital design specialists was formed in 2166 and was tasked with designing the first station specifically for use by Starfleet. The initial design phase lasted until 2175 when the a selection of six possible designs were put before Stafleet command. After review the Pulsar class design was chosen and this design entered and final design phase. During this phase the process to choose locations for the new stations was started.

Construction of the first of the Pulsar class stations was stared in 2181. This new station was located in orbit of an icy dwarf planet in the scattered cloud region of the Sol system at a distance of one hundred AUs from earth. Construction was completed in 2191 and after a short ceremony on board the station was commissioned as fully operational. By 2185 six more stations of this class were under construction through out the Federation with the option to build more as needs demanded.

During the time of their operation the Pulsar Class stations served not only Starfleet command centers but as starship repair and construction facilities,along with centers of commerce between Federation members and rest stops for civilian travelers. The role of these stations as symbols of the young Federation can not be overstated and they set the standard of what a Starfleet star base should be.

During the war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire from 2256 to 2257 many of the Pulsar class stations were attacked by Klingon forces, while some stations were able to drive off the attackers a hand full, including Starbase One fell to the Klingons. After the cease fire and retreat of Klingon forces back to their side of the border these stations were reclaimed and repaired and by 2268 the last of the lost stations were fully operational.

By the 2200's the rapid expanse of the Federation along with advancements in technology and newer ship designs that we trending larger than their predecessors had outpaced the abilities of the Pulsar class stations to operate as front line stations. In 2265 the decision was made to build no more stations of this class in favor of newer stations designs that were either under construction or in the later phases of design. In 2270 the first of the new Spacedock Class stations was commissioned in Earth orbit. As these new larger stations entered service the older Pulsar class stations took a secondary role such as local command centers and research facilities. In 2279 the Regula class station, Regula One was commissioned and eventually more stations of this class were built taking over the role of dedicated research facilities from the ageing Pulsar class.

The Pulsar Class was decommissioned in 2322, meaning that no new stations of this design were to be built nor would any stations that suffered extreme damage be repaired. This class held on operating in areas were it was seen as unfeasible to dedicate resources to build the larger Spacedock Class until the 2340's when the Regulus class stations entered service. By 2356 the last of the Pulsar Class stations was officially retired from service.
