Class Information
The design that would eventually become the Pathfinder Class started out as one of may proposed during the early design phase of the Defiant Class but was shelved when it was decided that the Defiant Design Project would make use of a design that diverged radically from the standard look of Starfleet vessels. In 2383 the design was brought out again as the need for a new class of ships that could carry out missions research and operate as a test bed for newly developed systems and equipment. The Pathfinder design underwent a round of design revisions and the final design was approved in early 2384. Construction of the USS Pathfinder was stared later that year at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards and the completed ship was taken out of drydock for a preliminary shake down cruise in 2387. In the early part of 2388 the Pathfinder was returned to dry dock for a three months to make required adjustments to the ship's systems. The Pathfinder was launched once more later that year for a second shakedown cruise and in mid 2389 the Pathfinder was officially commissioned in a short ceremony in orbit of Mars.
Several ships of the Pathfinder class have now been completed with more ships under construction throughout the federation. The ships of this class currently in operation have all proven to be well suited for research missions with a wide array of lab facilities and an extensive array of sensor systems. While the Pathfinder and her sister ships are meant primary as mobile research platforms they are equipped to handle tactical missions if so required. These ships have thirteen phaser arrays spread across the outer surface of the hull and two forward and two aft facing torpedo tubes. These ships are also equipped with a multi-layered shielding system and a five centimeter layer of Ablative Armor built into the outer hull.
While it is still early in the lifespan of the Pathfinder class to say with certainty the legacy these ships will leave it should be noted that the performance of the ships so far points to them making a significant impact on the development of Federation science and technology. Who know the Pathfinder class might one day be as recognizable as the Constitution or Galaxy class ships. Only time will tell.
