At a Glance

The Orion species are native to a Rimward, Spinward sector straddling Klingon and Federation space: it is alternately referred to as The Borderlands, the Orion Neutrality, and the Orion Colonies. Individual Orions can be found throughout the Alpha and Beta Quadrants and sometimes seem ubiquitous in the seedier ports of call.
While Orion merchants and tradesmen can be found across the Quadrant, they are most well known for their affiliation with the Orion Syndicate, a criminal cartel that certainly has origins in Orion space. Only a small percentage of Orions have any regular contact or affiliation with the Syndicate. It is a rare Orion, however, who does not at least know of someone who is affiliated.
As wide-ranging as these green-skinned beings seem to be, they are not pioneers and have little interest in either exploring or conquest: their primary interest is the exchange of trade and services.
The enduring stereotype of the Orion race is that they are treacherous, sybaritic and decadent, preferring both violent bloodsports and uninhibited sexual pleasure. It is a pattern of assumption that individual Orions may embrace or combat freely, but most acknowledge the stereotype as having some truth to it.
Orion neutrality and the Orion use of slavery are well-documented socio-political phenomena, both playing complex roles within the greater Orion culture.

Physiology

Because the Orion civilizations engaged in a diaspora from their homeworld over 200,000 years ago, as a species they have had time to evolutionarily diverge and diversify. This interstellar colonization created new Orion ethnicities and eclipsed some of those that once existed on Orion. However, they share a common physiology, descended from a mammalian primate species under a blue-white star, on a hot and very humid Class M world. They are placental mammals with high but age-limited rates of fertility.

On average, Orion males and females are taller and stronger than their Human counterparts. Females average 177.8cm, or 5'10". Males average 6'2" or 188cm in height. However, height and mass differences vary greatly among the various Orion planet-ethnicities because of varied native gravities. The Vondemi are stockier and shorter because the gravity on Vondem is higher. By contrast, Botchoki tend to be tall and leaner due to their planet's lighter gravity.

High Protein-Based Metabolism

Orions have a higher metabolism than Human Beings. The result is that Orion often appear fitter and leaner than Humans, with both bulk and lean muscle mass. Orion bodies are less apt to store lipids as their ancestral world is extremely warm. However, their nutritional requirements are almost double that of a Human, and their need for protein is almost triple.

Orion body temperatures are higher than Humans, running around 106 degrees Fahrenheit / 41 degrees Celsius. To a Human, Orions would feel feverish.

Carnivorism and Predation

Orions descend from a proto-sapient primate species that kept to the trees of Orion's jungle. Evolutionarily, this has created a species comfortable with climbing as well as with heights. Very few Orions are acrophobic. The pre-hominid Orion was a meat eater and expanded from obligate carnivorism to partial-omnivorousness. They gained unique amino acids and sugars from this addition to their diet, which expanded their neurological capabilities.

Orions possess two full sets of canines (for a total of eight) and a post-canine tooth where Humans possess bicuspids. Orions descend from ambush predators, fond of small prey. Because of their arboreal past, Orions are excellent climbers, with a superior sense of proprioception (awareness of self in space) and balance (which may explain why so many are such sensual dancers). Because of the ambush tactics, Orions also tend to be quite stealthy and light on their feet. However, because of their high metabolism, Orions have reduced endurance and are more greatly impacted by sleep deprivation.

Orion Ethnicities

200,000 years of interstellar travel alone has begun to craft Orion ethnicities that did not exist on prewarp Orion. The species is ancient and their colonies have existed for as long as some civilizations. The seeds of what would become the Orion races started on Orion and have been amplified. Regional Caju spread their people to certain worlds and that region's genetic expression took hold as dominant genetic expression over time. However, some unexplained genetic mutation has taken root as well.

Ur'eon

Orion female

The term "Ur'eon" is the name for Orions native to Beta Orionis IV, the ancestral homeworld of the Orion species. When one thinks of a "classic" Orion- greenish-yellow skin, black hair, deep-set, almond-shaped bedroom eyes, and tall, athletic builds, they are likely evoking the image of the Ur'eon. Ur'eon hair can be wavy to curly, though many Ur'eon adopt Kolari fashions and either shave the hair (if male) or straighten it (in the Kolari female way). Ur'eon can be anywhere from a khaki-green, to a deep olive in skintone, but the native tint of the skin is from green to green-yellow. Erratics are extremely rare, comprising less than 1 in 120,000 Orions.

Botchok Blues

Botchoki Female

Native to the world of Botchok in Klingon space, the Botchoki split from Ur'eon stock 150,000 years ago. The signature appearance of the Botchoki is that their skintone shifts from a yellow tint of green, to a blue tint of green. Botchoki are sometimes described as "the color of a lime," though there is a spectrum of skintones that are "cooler" than the warm-lean of Ur'eon skin. Botchoki are taller and leaner than their Ur'eon cousins (Botchok gravity is lighter) and hypertrophy in males is less common. Botchoki are always dark-eyed and their eyes may be rounder than their Ur'eon relatives. Botchoki hair is always curly and can push into loosely wooly.

Kolar Fold

Kolari Female

The Kolari have a distinct appearance and it is they that have set many of the enduring fashion friends of Orion societies. Though once considered strange and offputting by prewarp Orions, the Kolari are now known as "Imperial Orions" and dictate, to a degree, what is aesthetically pleasing. The Kolari have skin tones similar to the Ur'eon (though they are sometimes more vibrant), but the mark of the Kolari is the Kolar Fold. This is a monolid eye shape, usually with an Epicanthic fold to the eyelid. Kolari would look similar to East Asians. Finally, Kolari hair is usually straight or slightly wavy, though both sexes favor shaving. Kolari females currently wear elaborate wigs.

Vondemi Erratics

Vondemi Female

Though Ur'eon Orions are the likely evoked image of the race, the Vondemi are most likely the types of Orion encountered in Federation space. Vondemi are looked down on, especially by the Kolari, as they are the most unlike the Orion base. A typical Vondemi is more stocky and shorter (though no less graceful) and tend to be more powerfully built. Vondemi skin tones run the gamut, from the yellow greens of Ur'eon to a slightly bluish lean similar to the Botchoki. What makes the Vondemi so unusual is the common genetic expression of "Erratics." Erratics have red hair and may have green, blue or gray eyes. Almost a quarter of Vondemi people are Erratic in some way.

Minor Planet Variations

The minor planets of the Orion Borderlands are often too young to have established their own native look, or are so colonial that they have the look of their parent world.

Velod

The Velod are the only colony to establish their Caju after settlement and are a "new" colony (meaning only a few thousand years). The Velod are Kolari, the only distinction among them seems to be a strong tendency for wavy hair and darker-than-average skin tones.

Uryeis

Despite colonial status, Uryeis is an old settlement. It was settled there as a House of Urqinzhe and only later grew into a colony. Uryei appear to be Ur'eon in almost every aspect.

Rastacine

Rastacine was settled by a breakaway Caju of Kolar, so they tend to have the Kolar Fold. However, there are also a sizeable number of Botchoki there. The Rastacine Erratic is a being with gray eyes, which is quite rare. Rastacine has heavier gravity than Kolar and so Rastacini may have builds similar to the Vondemi.

71 Orionis

71 Orionis is little more than a colony of Botchoki and Red Orions who fled Botchok when the Klingons occupied their world. Their look is indistinguishable from the Botchoki, save perhaps that they are not as tall or lean.

Verex III

Verex III is a world for all Orions and is a center of trade. All Caju in good standing are welcome to trade and do business. Those that settle on Verex, however, tend to be the working, lower classes of any Caju. On Verex III, one can find an Orion descended from any other Orion world, including Red Orions.

Orion Albinism

Albinism is ranked among the rarest of Orion Erratics and again, most tend to be from Vondem. Orion Albinism expresses as cool, slate gray skin- because Orion blood is hemocyanin-based the skin has a vaguely cool blue to green duskiness but is otherwise gray. Most Gray Orions have poor vision or limited color vision and, as with most expressions of albinism, are sensitive to ultraviolet light. Gray Orions are seen as somewhat sinister by ordinary Orions, though the opinion varies by world and individual. The Kolari are, again, the least tolerant and the Vondemi the most accepting in general.

Red Orions

Red Orions, native to Botchok but occasionally found elsewhere, are not actually related to the Orion species. They are a subservient race on Botchok though they are free to travel. Their name for themselves is Cheohza. Red Orions is an alien moniker- they are known as Bot'vandi among Orions.

Physiological Misconceptions

The green-hued skin of the Orion species led early explorers and xeno-culturalists to hypothesize that they are photosynthetic and plant-like. This has little basis in fact- Orion skin is green because of a melanin compound and hemocyanin which produces the green hue. Variations in the hue of the green, expressed through melanin cell production subtypes and blood type variations, produces Orion skintones from yellow-green to bluish-green, and from medium to dark.
