What is known about the Nihari has been gathered from various sources; traders, survivors of attacks and limited sensor data, but it is believed that they are a race of humanoid aliens ruled by a Premier. The Nihari are believed to have four extremely long limbs and hollow bones, looking quite languid and fragile. In stark contrast, they have remarkable mental abilities that reportedly allow them to not only recover from injuries, but also master the controls of their vessels. Their home-world of Vixia is supposed to be a bleak, frozen wasteland of ice and snow with one side of the planet forever in darkness. They can only survive in a thin, temperate region of the planet around the equator which requires them to live in small enclaves when on the surface. Once the Nihari reach elder status, they leave the homeworld, only returning to die in a special ceremony once they reach the ‘Age of Expiration’.


Languid, tall and gangly, the Nihari people have four long upper limbs and are made up of a hollow bone structure. Their digits are also long and pointed, making the manipulation of ships controls quite difficult. All Nihari are different shades of grey, with honoured elders often looking paler than those both younger and older than them. Males of the species are actually shorter than the females, averaging between 7 and 8 feet tall, whilst females are closer to 9 feet in height. When close to death, Nihari are known to visibly shrink by up to two feet. Females of the species tend to have slightly thicker extremities than their male counterparts, but they are much weaker. Males have a stronger rib cage and their bones are not as hollow as the females. Bone density decreases in both genders as they age.

Perhaps the most notable feature of these creatures is the fact that they are blind. They have hollowed out areas where eyes would be expected. They also lack a nose, instead having two nostrils that sit flush with their skin.

Life Span

Nihari are considered 'Younglings' until they reach six rotations. At that point, Nihari become considered 'Honored Elders' and leave the homeworld, serving on the many ships of their fleet for another six rotations. If they live to see the start of their thirteenth rotation, these complex people believe they have reached the 'Age of Expiration' and become an 'Ancient'. Ancients are revered in Nihari society for having mastered their abilities to such a level that they have been able to survive a whole twelve rotations and begin the final phase of their life. At this time, they return to the homeworld where they commune with other 'Ancients' until the 'Time of Passing' occurs and their spirits join the 'Ancestors.' At this point, the body becomes nothing more than an empty vessel and is unceremoniously disposed of by being dumped on the planets surface where it will freeze and eventually disappear beneath layer upon layer of snow and ice.

By Federation standards, one Nihari rotation would compare to three Earth years, thus reaching Honored Elder status at 18 Earth years of age, and the Age of Expiration at 32.

Personality Traits

A race of telekinetic humanoids, the Nihari are a calculated, cruel and vicious xenophobic species who are deeply intolerant of outsiders. To anyone beyond their territory, the Nihari are little more than a myth. No one has seen one in decades and lived to tell the tale. Legends of old describe them to be ‘evil and deadly’ creatures, which isn’t far from the truth.

One considerable strength of the Nihari is their mental abilities. They spend most of their 'youngling' period perfecting their abilities, learning to us their abilities to accommodate for the fact they are blind. Their incredible mental prowess enables them to not only control their vessels through neural interfaces but they have evolved to such a degree that they now have incredible regenerative abilities that assist with healing wounds and injuries, providing they are not in too much of a weakened state. They have highly ordered and logical minds, and they are obsessed with mathematics and statistics. They are formidable tacticians which enables them to strike targets quickly and efficiently.


Xenophobic to the extreme, they have a strong fear and distrust of that which is perceived to be foreign or strange to them. Their perceptions of other species often manifests itself in suspicion of the activities of others, and a desire to eliminate their presence to secure the purity of their space.

Those that they believe to be inferior enough and lack the ability to challenge them are permitted to coexist, but at a heavy price; they are often subjugated and treated as third class citizens.

Upon becoming an Honored Elder, the Nihari take on a variety of functions aboard their starships and installations, ranging from engineers, to scientists and even leaders. Then, upon reaching their thirteenth rotation, Nihari are considered Ancients and begin their death rituals for the Age of Expiration. During this time, Ancients commune with others on the homeworld and enter a period of deep reflection and calming meditation as they prepare their spirit for the next life.

When the Nihari finally begin to die, they enter the Time of Passing, during which time, other Ancients prepare their bodies for the passing and assist with meditations and chants until they finally pass. Upon the passing of a Nihari, the body is unceremoniously dumped on the planets surface where it will freeze and eventually disappear beneath layer upon layer of snow and ice, in complete contrast with how the body is treated during the life of the Nihari people.

The Nihari abolished the concept of an economy centuries ago. Instead, they trade with their subjugated species to obtain the technology or resources they require. Poverty, famine and homelessness were abolished over six hundred years ago.

Stellar Cartography

The exact location of the Vixia System is unknown to the Federation and what is known about it has been obtained from research and the word of mouth of natives within the Wastelands, where the Nihari are myth and legend. What intelligence has been gathered and verified from various sources indicates that the homeworld is a P-Class bleak, frozen wasteland of ice and snow with one side of the planet forever in darkness. They can only survive in a thin, temperate region of the planet around the equator which requires them to live in small enclaves when on the surface. It is unknown how many stars or planets exist in the system, or even how far Nihari space expands or how many planets are in the Ascendancy.


A supremely advanced species, the Nihari have developed a form of faster-than-light travel (FTL) that allows their vessels to 'jump' from one location to another. This space-folding drive involves making instantaneous "jumps" across vast distances in space from location to location instantaneously, helping to perpetuate the myth that they can vanish 'in the blink of an eye.'

The technology behind the FTL systems is such that, providing the relevant data is known (how that data is acquired, for instance how ships can determine what obstacles are present at their destination, despite never having travelled there before, is not known) ships can jump with a high degree of accuracy, allowing ships to rendezvous in space and even "park" in a synchronous orbit directly above a given point on a planet's surface. Proper FTL use even enables vessels to arrive in crowded areas, such as the middle of an asteroid field or other ships, without the risk of collision and damage. What happens if a ship jumps to the same point at the same time as another ship, or jumps to a point occupied by another ship, is unknown. Unlike warp drive, FTL jump drives can be used within an atmosphere.

An area of spatial distortion of some sort is also produced when a ship 'jumps'. It is not clear how this distortion field, which seems to produce effects like a shock wave, also coincides with the known effect of a jump acting as a sort of vacuum, which instead of producing an outwards wave should pull the surrounding space into it. The two effects might occur consecutively, the vacuum effect left in the ship's wake, then the expelled shock wave, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Nihari weapons technology is also significantly more advanced than that of Starfleet and the Federation. Their weapons are a form of phased polaron energy weapons and isolytic subspace torpedoes which were outlawed by the Khitomer Accords. In the same way that Nihari humanoids can regenerate their bodies, their vessels have regenerative shielding and their hull plating is extremely effective at dissipating enemy fire. The Nihari are able to transport through most types of shielding systems with their advanced transporter systems and can do so from great distances. Their sensor systems are incredibly advanced.


As yet, very little information is actually known by the Federation about this species and what they do know is widely considered myth or rumour. According to stories told by merchants, traders and outlaws on Iota Cassiopeiae, the Nihari have existed for centuries. They hide in the shadows and reveal themselves only when they have the desire to do so. According to one such tale, the Nihari first achieved spaceflight over half a century ago.
