Class Description

Class Design Brief

Forward dorsal view

The Miranda Class follows the basic light cruiser desing. The ships hull is a saucer with the bridge located at the top most point of the hull. The twin warp nacelles are held below the ship's hul on warp nacelles. There is a weapons pod mounted behind and above the bridge by two suppport pylons that also allows access to the pod via jefferies tubes.

The Miranda Class ships are equiped with a wide array of sensor systems divided between two sensor domes. One dome is located just above the bridge and the second is mounted to the ventral surface of the hull. These sensor systems feed data to the bridge and the science labs located within the hull. There is a single aft facing shuttle bay located just under the ships bridge that houses the ship auxiliary craft.

Ships's of the Miranda Class is equipped with four dual emitter Phaser Banks with two of the phaser banks mounted to the doral surface of the hull and two phaser banks mounted to the ventral surface of the hull. There are also twelve Phase Cannons, these cannons are arranged in groups of three. Two of these groups of three are mounted to the dorals surface of the hull and the other two groups are mounted to the ventral surface. These ships have eight torpedo tubes that hare housed within the weapons pod. Four of the tubes cover the forward firing arc and the other four cover the aft fing arc. The Miranda Class is equipped with Graviton Shielding System to protect the ship from the hazardus conditions the ship will encouter.

Class Service History

In 2264 Starfleet beagian looking for new ship designs to replace the ageing ships classes curently in serivce. The Beta Antares Fleet Yards submitted several desings, one of which was the USS Miranda, a heavly armed light curiser. Once selected construcion was started in 2266 progress was halted in 2268 when a problem was found with the ships new torpeod loading system. The system was redesigned and construction continued in 2269 Construcion was compleated in 2273 and the ship was launched for a shakedonw curise. In 2274 the ship returned to dry dock to deal with a issue with powe fluctuations withing the EPS system that could not be handled by the shake down crew. The ship returned to space later that same year and after a brief cruise the USS Miranda was fully commisioned in 2275 and contruciton was started on further ships of this class.

The Miranda Class was soon a regular sight patroling the outer reaches of the Federation. These shisp also proved to be well suted to carry out longterm reserch missions in newly explored areas just beyond Federation space. By the turn of the century the Mirada Class had formed the backbone of the light cruiser commplament of the fleet, carring out a wide varity of missions freeing up larger ship classes such as the Constitution Class for missions beyond explored space.

By the 2360s the Miranda Class was showing its age and was regulated to operations within the core worlds of the Federation as newer and more capable ships took over operations near the Federation Boarder. In 2368 the descision was made to retire the class and in 2377 the last Miranda Class was decomsioned 102 years after the commisioning of the USS Miranda.
