Class Design Brief
The Design of the Malachowski Class is composed of a saucer section with twin warp nacelles slung under and to the sides of the hull. The bridge for ships of this class is located on the hull's dorsal surface, a location that would become the standard location for the bridge in future Starfleet ship designs. These ships are equipped with a single shuttle bay located at the aft most point of the saucer with the ship's impulse engines flanking this shuttle bay.
Malachowski Class ships are equipped with extensive sensor system with the long range sensors located in two sensor domes. The upper dome is located at the top of the bridge module with the lower dome located on the ventral surface of the hull. These ships are also equipped with a wide range of dedicated research labs.
While these ships are primarily meant to carry out missions of research and exploration the Malachowski are capable of acting the the defiance of itself and the Federation. There are a total of sixteen phaser emitters spreed across the dorsal and ventral surface of the ships hull with twelve of these emitters being dual emitter banks and the remainder being four single emitters. There are also six torpedo launchers built into the ships of the Malachowski Class with four of those tubes covering the forward firing arc and the other two covering the aft firing arc. The Malachowski Class is equipped with gravitation based shielding systems to protect the ship from attack and the hazards of deep space.
Class Service History
In 2228 Starfleet was in need of a new light cruiser that would operate primarily within the borders of the Federation with an emphasis on extended missions of research and exploration withing areas of space previously discovered by larger front line ships. The Advanced Starship Design Bureau put forth six possible designs and after a ten month review of these designs the design designated LC2221-F (renamed to the Malachowski Class at the start of construction). Construction was started at the San Francisco Ship yards in 2230 with a brief keel laying ceremony where the first two sections of the space frame were gamma welded together.
By 2232 as construction was nearing completion a design flaw was discovered in the ships warp core leading to the need to redesign both the matter and antimatter injectors. This led to a four month delay and pushed the completion of construction into the early part of 2233. Once construction was completed the USS Malachowski was launched for a shake down cruise. During the cruise fluctuations in the EPS systems while at high warp reduced the top speed down to Warp 3.8 and kept the ships phasers from operating at full power. The Malachowski returned to the ship yards to make the needed modifications to the EPS system prior to a second shake down in 2235. After this second shake down cruise the USS Malachowski was commissioned in a brief ceremony in Earth Orbit in 2236.
During the 2240 as older ships were decommissioned the Malachowski Class became a regular site through out the federation as they proved capable in their primary mission of exploration and research. The Malachowski Class soon proved themselves to be capable patrol ships often seen in the far reaches of the Federation protecting the trade routes often preyed upon by raiders and pirates who would take advantage of cargo vessels travailing through these less occupied areas.
In 2256 at least two of these ships were part of the fleet that fought the Klingons at the Battle of the Binary stars. Other ships of this class were pulled into the fight as this battle lead to the outbreak of full scale war with the Klingon Empire. In 2311 ships of this class were directed to the Romulan boarder to support the Federation forces already there in response to the Tomed Incident.
By the 2330's the Malinowski Class was showing its age and the process of decommissioning this class was under begun 2332 and by 2341 the last Malinowski Class ship was decommissioned in Earth orbit one hundred and five years after the USS Malachowski was first commissioned.
