Class Design Brief
The Magee Class design is composed of a single saucer shaped hull, Ships of this class are equipped with two warp nacelles and two impulse engines. In a departure from the standard Starfleet design the warp nacelles and impulse engines are housed within the same structures. In a further departure from the standard Starfleet ship design these units are embedded in the body of the ship's hull.
The warp coils are housed within four coil bays within the nacelle structures. This arrangement allows the Magee class ships to take advantage of the greater maneuverability while at warp typical of four nacelle ship designs and allows for more space dedicated to other uses within the ship's hull. The impulse engines are housed in the aft ventral section of the nacelles.
The Magee class is also notable for its lack of a main deflector dish. Instead there are two navigational deflector arrays housed in the forward section of the warp nacelles just above the bussard collectors.
Ships of the Magee class are equipped with two shuttle bays located in the aft ventral area of the ship's hull located between the twin warp nacelles.
The Magee class is equipped with a total of sixteen Type VIII dual emitter phaser banks with eight of these mounted to the dorsal surface of ships hull with the reaming eight mounted to the ventral surface of the hull. Also the Magee class is equipped with four torpedo launchers mounted so that two cover the forward firing arc and two cover the aft firing arc. Magee class ships are also equipped with Deflector Shields to protect ships of this class from the hazards found in the depths of space.
Class Service History
In 2220 the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards submitted a design proposal for the USS Magee. The unusual design was reviewed by the Advanced Starship Design Bureau. After this review the design was tentatively accepted and passed back to Utopia Planitia with notes on possible modifications for a final design pass. The design for the Magee was modified per the ASDB notes and returned to the bureau for a second review. In 2225 the design was accepted and construction began later that same year. In 2281 construction was halted after it was discovered that the ships computer systems had previously undiscovered manufacturing defects that resulted in data loss during heavy system use. This required the ship's computer core to be removed and replaced along with all sub-processors through out the ship. Once this was completed construction continued in 2232. Construction was completed in 2236 and the ship was launched on a shake down cruise after the Magee returned to the fleet yards to make final modifications to the ship's systems in 2237. After a quick cruise all systems passed review and in 2238 the Magee was officially commissioned while in orbit of Andoria.
During the 2240s the ships of the Magee class were often tasked with extended missions exploring, mapping and cataloging the flora and fauna of systems discovered by the front line explorers. Several ships of this class were also operated under the authority of the Starfleet Core of Engineers as mobile maintenance/construction platforms. The SCE utilized the Magee class maintaining the Federation infrastructure such as subspace communications relay stations.
While not designed for combat operations ship's of this class were pressed into service during times of wars with one ship of this class present at the Battle of the Binary Stars. Not only did ships of this class see combat during the ensuing war but were pressed into combat operations during the Klingon war of 2267. In the time between these wars and after the war of 2267 the Magee class returned to their peace time missions.
By the 2330s the Magee class were easily out classed by the newer classes that had entered service and Starfleet began retired the design and the existing ships were slowly phased out of service with the last ship decommissioned in 2336.
