Class Information

After the Hobus supernova, Galae command had to recommission old ships out of necessity as the Romulus spacedocks were destroyed. Studies obtained from Federation intelligence on the Defiant Class and Borg technology provided by the Tal Shiar led to a study using complementary PODs to create a multi-purpose ship which was easy and rather cheap to produce. As the platform for the study Galae chose the Lanora scout class, throughly tested over the ages. 12 Lanora Scouts have been converted thus far. The study would last 4 years in total with a first reevaluation cycle after 2 years in service. Experienced engineers have been called upon by Galae command to commandeer these prototypes instead of regular officers and also report on the performance.

The first challenge was to convert a 1-2 man long-range scout vessel into a ship capable of housing a core crew suited for the task of performing long-range patrols or even combat missions. Capsule-like sleeping pods replaced crew cabins to make space for other, more important equipment. The interior structure had to be reinforced to survive combat damage with minimal crew losses. Progresses in metallurgy and poly-alloy engineering methods made a raise in durability by 67.9% possible while holding on to the Lanora original design and dimensions.

Lanora II aft view

The true innovation came with introducing a modular aft section being able to hold customizable P.O.D.s which could be rapidly exchanged at a starbase or outpost and tailor the ship to several mission types. A tactical P.O.D. for instance would come with an advanced tactical station, a dual plasma cannon turret, shield boosters and auxilliary power systems and adding an aft torpedo launcher and would turn the Lanora II into a kind of medium-range destroyer, a ship class neglected by the Romulan Navy in favor of the much bigger warbird. Experiences in clashes with the Federation and the Cardassians over time showed the versatility of this ship class and so the Lanora II is the logical choice to close that gap. Laboratory P.O.D.s, extra cabin P.O.D.s or even Reman Commando P.O.D.s have been produced for the testing.

The already excellent sensor array of the original Scout was kept and bolstered with a Tachyon Detection Grid to be able to detect cloaked ships trying to trangress the Neutral Zone or detect and board smugglers.

The greatest disadvantage of this class is the cramped space being shared by the crew. Whilst the captain has the privilege to his own secluded, but small cabin, the other personnel has to sleep in small tubular capsules and share a common mess with the joy of replicated food. Also, there are no holodecks or bigger training facilities like bigger ships have. Galae psychological divison advised a regular visit of outposts and starbase for recreation purposes to keep crew‘s morale intact. Also, it was advised – because of the tense relationship to their Reman brethren – not to have more than one commando P.O.D. installed.

Deck one houses the bridge of the ship together with a workshop and the means to replicate spare parts. The 2 P.O.D.s are also accessible from this deck. Two cabins can be used to transport V.I.P. or can be used by the other 2 officers when not used otherwise.

Deck two is home to the rest of the crew. It sports a mess room, which can be used as a situation room if the need arises, a small gym for up to 3 crewmen to train and a basic sickbay. One biobed stands ready to treat a patient while 2 stasis capsules make sure that grave injured crew will survive until arrival at the next outpost or rendevouz with another capital ship. A medical P.O.D. can expand the medical capabilities to a field hospital with additional 3 biobeds and a operation theatre as well as advanced medical replicators.

Sensor stations and the cloaking device can also be found here. In the centre of the ship the singularity provides power to the other systems. From a console, the ship‘s power is over watched by the 2nd senior engineer, who usually acts as the XO.

Whether the space-optimized design turns out to be a success, only time will tell.
