Class Description

Constructed in the early part of the 2360's, the Laehval was always a "back-seat" vessel of the Romulan Empire. Originally the Laehval Class was sketched out to be the Empire's new battlecruiser, replacing the old D-7's that were still in service in mass. Although it was shortly realized that wasn't going to be so.

The ships design was just too limited to be a new line of combat oriented vessels. And way too small to compliment the D'deridex as a multi-purpose vessel. It was decided that this would be the new line of science vessels, while still being able to pack a punch if needed.

After the design was put through and construction of the class began, Romulan Military Command wanted to keep the ship on the back lines against the Federation. Therefore it was kept to scientific missions within the Empire itself. Finally when the Dominion War broke out about six ships of the class got a chance to enter the battle. Even with their limited weaponry, the ships were still good enough to hold their own against Dominion Attack ships.

The Empire knew this would definitely be a class to hold it's own into the next century.
