Patrol / Scout Ship
|Date Entered Service:||
The First example of a Klingon Bird of Prey was first encountered in 2153 but Starfleet had first received intelligence on the Bird of Prey starting in 2151. Like the later versions of the Bird of Prey the ship of the 22nd century was used for raids and scouting mission beyond the boarders of the Klingon Empire. This is best illustrated by the fact that the first encounter with this ship was along the outer boundary of the Sol System. There is no known class name for this ship as all references to it simply called it a bird of prey.
Overall the Bird of Prey of the 22nd Century had the basic design features of the Bird of Prey type ships that would come later. The hull is separated into a forward Command Hull and aft Engineering Hull connected by a long thin neck. These early Bird of Prey carried more disrupter cannons than the latter versions.
The Command Section houses the bridge. Running around the forward perimeter of the bridge module is a sensor array. In later Bird of Prey designs this will be the location of the cloaking field emitter. The Command Hull houses the forward torpedo tube and two dual disrupter turrets. The torpedo tube is located on the ventral side of the Command Hull in the forward most section of the hull. The disrupter turrets are also located on the ventral side of the command hull and are located at the midsection of the Command Hull with one on the Port and the other on the Starboard side.
The Engineering Hull comprised the main bulk of the ship and housed the crew quarters along with the majority of the ship systems. Unlike later Birds of Prey the ones fielded by the Klingons in the 22nd Century was equipped with warp nacelles. These nacelles are located at the top most section of the Engineering Hull. Between these nacelles is the Impulse engines. There was one engine facing aft and another facing forward. the aft engine provided the ships forward momentum and assisted in maneuvering the ship. The forward engine was used primarily in maneuvering. Just below the aft impulse engine is the shuttle bay. This bay houses a single shuttle. On each side of the Engineering Hull are two wings. These wings supported a Disrupter Cannon on each wing tip and was equipped with hinges allowing the wings positions to be changed depending on the situation. Attached to the ventral surface of the Engineering Hull just aft of were the neck connects to the Engineering hull is a turret that houses twin disrupter cannons. This turret is capable of 360 degree firing arc. The aft facing torpedo tube is located just below the shuttle bay.
The Bird of Prey was known to be equipped with at least two tractor beam emitters with one emitter mounted to the ventral surface of each wing. There are six escape pods that are launched from the ventral surface of the Bird of prey. There is also a docking port port located in the ventral surface of the ventral hull
