Class Description

The K’Vort-class Bird-of-Prey takes the majority of its design cues from the old D12-class and B’rel-class vessels of the same type. The design principle behind the Bird-of-Prey is the closest to a truly ‘avian’ design that the Klingon Empire has constructed, featuring a clearly defined ‘head’, ‘neck’, ‘body’, and ‘wings’ that are indicative of most avian creatures throughout the galaxy. The designers of the Bird-of-Prey series of vessels even took great care in incorporating hull ‘feathers’ into the ‘wings’ to further accentuate the avian feel of the craft. This is one of the few instances in which aesthetics played any sort of a role in Klingon ship construction.

As with many Klingon vessels, the bulk of the K’Vort-class vessel is situated in the aft ‘body’ of the craft. Also, mirroring other designs, the bridge is a separate section connected to the main body by a long, thin ‘neck’. The ship’s ‘wings’ are the most unusual feature on the K’Vort-class, as well as all the other Bird-of-Prey style vessels. Depending on which flight mode the vessel is operating in (cruise, warp flight, and combat), the vessel’s wings would raise and lower. While it is somewhat conjectural as to whether this modification of the standard fixed wing design is overly practical, but it is agreed upon that the modification does accentuate the Bird-of-Prey theme on which the class was designed.

The K’Vort-class vessel was first seen being placed into service in the early 2350s, with the first officially designated K’Vort being commissioned in 2354. Much the same as other vessels in the Klingon Fleet, the K’Vort has become a staple in the inventory, remaining a front-line vessel even after the introduction of larger, more heavily armed capital ships such as the Vor’cha and the Negh’Var. While normally relegated to the role of patrol vessel, it still finds itself in the role of squadron lead when grouped with its smaller B’rel-class counterparts, confirming its place as a command vessel even with the advent of ships specifically intended to replace it.

Since the K’Vort-class’ introduction, it has served in several major confrontations in the service of the Klingon Empire. Most notably among the conflicts were the Cardassian War, the Klingon Civil War, the short lived Federation-Klingon War, and the Dominion War. While not the most heavily armed or armored vessel in the Klingon Defense Force, its speed, maneuverability and utility have secured this class’ place in the fighting force for centuries to come.
