Humans (Homo sapiens) are a species native to Sol III (Earth). They are commonly referred to as "Terrans," especially when signifying humans residing on Earth as opposed to other planets. They are one of three humanoid, as well as sentient, species known to have originated from Earth, aside from the Neanderthals (extinct) and the Voth.

Before becoming warp capable in 2063, the Humans endured a large scale nuclear conflict, now called World War III (2026-2053). Most major cities around the world were destroyed by the time the had war finally ended, and many regions resorted to a primitive and barbaric way of life as there was little governmental control.

Humanity was forced to rebuild its society as several technological advancements followed, including the first successful warp flight made by Zefram Cochrane's Phoenix craft. Following the previously thought impossible task was first contact established by the Vulcans on April 5, 2063 in Bozeman, Montana. Another significant invention was the transporter by Emory Erickson sometime prior to 2121.

Humanity first went into deep space in 2151 when the first warp-5 capable starship, the NX-01 Enterprise, was launched. The launch followed years of protection by the Vulcans, who did not believe the humans were ready to venture into deep space. The second ship, the NX-02 Columbia, was released into space in 2153, the second of 15 starships to come.

In the ensuing 200+ years the Terrans continued to make advancements in technology and in space, founding the Coalition of Planets which later led to the formation of United Federation of Planets in 2161.
