Class Information
The Design for the USS Hover was submitted to the Advanced Starship Design Bureau in 2233 after a brief review by the Bureau the plans were approved and construction on the USS Hoover was begun at the Copernicus Ship Yards in lunar orbit in 23345 and in 2348 the Hoover left dry dock for a shake down cruise. During this cruise a problem was found with the ships weapons targeting systems causing phaser fire to miss the target eighty-five percent of the time. Impulse and warp drive efficiencies were also found to be lacking with the warp systems to be only forty-four percent efficient at the ships target cruising speed of warp 6. The ship was returned to the Copernicus Ship Yards where the problems with the engines and weapons systems were corrected and after a second shakedown cruise the USS Hoover was commissioned in 2239 and construction on three more ships of the Hoover class was started a month later.
The Hoover class had the Primary/Secondary hull layout with twin warp nacelles. The primary hull was the standard saucer design with the ships bridge on the dorsal portion of the primary hull. The ship was equip ed with two forward facing shuttle bays that flanked the ships bridge in a lay out that was similar to the Cardenas Class. Four of the ships ten phaser banks were also located on the dorsal surface of this hull. Another four phaser banks were located on the ventral surface of this hull. The two aft facing torpedo launchers were housed in this section of the ship. The ships primary sensors housed in dorsal and ventral sensor domes were housed in the primary hull along with the majority of the crew quarters. There were thirteen cargo bays within the primary hull with each bay equipped with cargo bay doors mounted to the ventral surface of the primary hull. The ship's science and medical labs were housed in this section of the ship's hull.
There was a neck section that extend from the ventral surface of the primary hull and lead down to a small secondary hull that housed the ships main deflector dish. Just above the dish was the two forward facing torpedo launchers. The impulse engines were located in this section and the warp nacelles were mounted on nacelle pylons with one nacelle on the port side and the other on the starboard side of the secondary hull. The engineering support labs and the ship's fabrication facilitates could be located in this section of the ship. There were two phaser banks mounted to the ventral surface of this hull to cover the blind spot in phaser coverage created by the secondary hull and warp nacelles. A suite of long range sensors were mounted behind the main deflector.
The Hoover class was a equally capable of undertaking missions of exploration as they are at missions of a more tactical nature. There were at least two ships of this class at the Battle of the Binary Stars and even more Hoover class saw action during the war with the Klingons. During this conflict several Hoover class ships were tasked with protecting several systems along the front lines of the conflict. Before and after the war the Hoover class was seen conducting mission of exploration along the borders of the Federation or cruising the trade routes in the more remote sections of Federation Space.
By 2325 The Hoover class was showing it age as newer and more advanced ships were entering into service. This along with the adoption of Isolinear Computer Systems in 2329 led to the Hoover and several other older ship classes being slated for decommissioning in favor of new classes. By 2336 the last Hoover class ship was decommissioned.
