Class Design Brief

Forward and aft elevations

The Excelsior Class follows the standard dual hull design of Star fleet ships. The ships bridge is located at the upper most point of the primary hull with the ships impulse engines located at the aft most point of the primary hull. The majority of the crew quarters along with the science and medical labs are located in this hull. Fourteen of the ship's nineteen phaser emitters are located on the surface of the primary hull with seven of these phaser banks mounted to the dorsal surface and the remaining seven mounted to the dorsal surface of the primary hull. There are two sensor domes housing the bulk of the ship's sensor systems that are part of the primary hull. One dome is located just above the ship's bridge and the second is located at the lowest point of the primary hull.

The primary and secondary hulls are connected by a neck that extends from the aft ventral section of the primary hull to the forward dorsal section of the secondary hull. This neck angles backward and houses two of the ships four forward facing torpedo tubes.

The secondary hull houses the majority of the ships engineering and support systems. Two of the ship's four froward torpedo tubes are located in the forward section of the secondary hull just above and flanking the ship's main deflector dish. The aft torpedo tubes are located under the ship's fantail just below the main shuttle bay. The secondary shuttle bay is also located in the aft sections of the lower decks of the engineering hull. The ship's warp pylons extend from the dorsal surface of the engineering hull at a point just forward of the primary shuttle bay and arc upward so that the warp nacelles are held in a position flanking the ship's bridge.


Class Service History

In 2239 Starfleet Command issued a design brief for a new heavy cruiser. At total of 46 different designs were revived by Command and after review the top ten ships were chosen these ten designs were returned to the ship yards that submitted them for refinement. The final deign, the USS Excelsior was chosen in 2245 and construction was started later that year at the San Francisco Fleet Yards. By 2251 as construction was nearing completion the new ship was selected as the test bed of a new warp reactor that was designed to provided the energy needed to push the Excelsior to speeds greater than any other ship in the fleet. It was expected that with this new system the Excelsior was expected to maintain a cruising speed of warp eight the Excelsior was refitted with this new reactor pushing the completion of the ship to 2255.

Once construction was completed the Excelsior was launched on a shake down cruise. When tested under stress the experimental warp reactor proved inherently unstable. When the Excelsior approached warp 4.98 the reactor would be become unstable and would auto shut down to prevent a warp breach. The Excelsior returned to the ship yards and the reactor deigns was modified. After testing the modified warp reactor it was determined that the design was unsalvageable and during the tests the Excelsior never reached speeds greater than warp 6.2. In 2257 the Excelsior once more returned to the San Francisco Fleet Yards were the failed warp reactor was removed and a more conventional warp reactor was installed. After successfully completing testing of this new reactor the Excelsior was commissioned while in Earth orbit in 2258.

As more ships of the Excelsior class have been put into service this class has proven itself as capable in a wide range of mission types. Its size allows these ships to undertake longer missions in deep space before having to return to space dock for resupply. Excelsior class has also proven to be well suited for diplomatic missions due to the on board amenities. In skirmishes with the Klingons, Gorn, and Romulans the Excelsior class ships have proven to be effective ships of war. The Excelsior has become the ship of choice for flag ships of the Admirals and is quickly becoming the backbone of the fleet. It is expected that ships of the Excelsior Class will continue to serve the needs of Starfleet and the Federation for the foreseeable future.
