The Eagle-class escort is a small, versatile vessel developed as a successor to the Aquarius-class, designed to bring escort-type tactical capabilities with enhanced range and adaptability compared to its predecessor. Conceived at the end of the 24th century alongside the Yorktown-class, the Eagle was developed from the outset to serve as a fully integrated vessel within the heavy explorer, though it is equally capable of independent patrol and support operations. As a modern escort, the Eagle is swift, well-shielded, and mission-configurable, but it is nevertheless a small and spartan platform.
Science and Exploration
The Eagle is not intended for independent exploratory operations. Its science labs are competent for sample collection, preliminary analysis, and short-range surveys, but the ship is best deployed as an advanced unit for larger scientific endeavours.
The modular nature of some internal spaces has nevertheless increased the scientific capabilities of the Eagle compared to the Aquarius. Where necessary, specialist laboratories or sample storage facilities can be installed ahead of missions, though this is a time-consuming process and likely indicates a planned, significant scientific operation. From aboard a mothership, an Eagle can arrive in-system with a standard escort loadout and launch two hours later, configured for geological survey support.
The ship has full planetary landing capability, and its enhanced sensor suite delivers efficient performance during active scans through interference, which has proven useful in nebular and debris-field operations.
Diplomacy
The Eagle-class would be a poor choice for any diplomatic duty. It is marginally less austere than the Aquarius, with more comfortable common areas and more windows, but it remains a utilitarian vessel with no dedicated diplomatic spaces or accommodation. A diplomatic party being transported for a journey of no more than a few hours may be hosted in the mess hall, but that is the limit of the ship’s diplomatic suitability outside of emergencies.
Engineering

The Eagle draws on the same design philosophy as the Aquarius, with an emphasis on miniaturisation and ease of maintenance, but with nearly two decades of advancement. The warp engine coils are derived from developments made for the Shran-class, albeit smaller and mounted on variable-geometry pylons. These give her effective cruising and emergency speeds, albeit inevitably more limited than those of larger ships with more substantial power outputs.
The compartments on Decks 2 and 3 have been built around a modular framework. Fitting new equipment to these spaces requires a physical installation from aboard a starbase or mothership, but allows the ship to shift between survey, search-and-rescue, and utility configurations in a matter of hours.
The Eagle was designed from the outset with theYorktown's Multi-Vector Assault Mode in mind. Her propulsion and tactical systems include dedicated data-link systems that allow the Yorktown's main computer to coordinate the Eagle as a third, independent vector. The umbilical connection points are also compatible with Odyssey-class docking cradles, allowing Eagle-class vessels to serve as escorts to that class, though the MVAM integration with the Odyssey is not available.
The engineering crew comprises an officer and five maintenance technicians, unchanged from the Aquarius, though automation has been extended somewhat, and the chief engineer’s station now offers greater remote capability than before.
Tactical
The Eagle’s tactical role is escort and fire support: nimble enough to fill gaps in a larger ship’s defensive coverage, hard-hitting against lightly armed opponents, and capable of disengaging from a fight it can’t win. Type-XII phasers provide the appropriate firepower for a modern starship, and the pulse phaser cannons deliver the primary offensive punch. When a head-on confrontation is impossible or impractical, the aft torpedo launchers offer compensatory firepower. The number of phaser arrays has been reduced to four based on optimization of firing arcs, while the number of pulse phaser cannons has been increased to six, with three on either side of the forward torpedo launchers. This arrangement consolidates the forward weapons into two modules, each intended to be upgraded over the ship’s service life.
The most significant tactical upgrade on the Aquarius predecessor is the installation of multiphasic shielding, in addition to the hull’s ablative armour. The Aquarius compensated for relatively weak shields with speed and maneuverability, while the Eagle, still reliant on such qualities, is more durable. In combined operations with the Yorktown, the Eagle can now absorb more punishment while manoeuvring for the close-range engagements that the class specialises in, rather than depending on the mothership to degrade the enemy’s shields first.
Against larger warships, the Eagle remains dangerous only alongside allies. Alone, she is adept at taking down raiders, escorts, and lightly armed vessels; against dedicated warships, she should not be the first or last resort.
As part of a starbase’s fleet of auxiliary craft, the Eagle is most useful for customs enforcement and patrol missions, but is able to conduct border defence operations against small and last-generation threats. Like the Aquarius, it is an effective leader for a squadron of runabouts in such circumstances.
Shipboard Life

Life aboard an Eagle, as with the design predecessors of the Aquarius and {class|Defiant}}, is not comfortable. Accommodation is spartan - four single-berth cabins for the most senior officers, double-berth cabins for other officers, and bunk rooms for enlisted crew - but several quality-of-life improvements on her 24th-century forebears have been implemented. There are more windows throughout the upper two decks, and a mess hall that is a few square metres larger and more comfortable than its predecessor’s.
Unlike the Aquarius, whose crews were typically drawn on a rotating basis from a mothership or starbase’s complement, Eagle crews tend toward longer rotation and a stronger ship-specific identity. The Yorktown’s use of the Eagle and the ship's slightly more complex systems means that crew familiarity with each other and the vessel has proven useful. In practice, this leads to a mothership or station selecting a dedicated core Eagle crew from its ranks, with command teams and specialists rotating in as missions need. Outside of the Eagle's deployment, of course, such personnel return to their primary assignment aboard the mothership.
The sickbay is oversized for the hull, with four biobeds, a combination exam-surgical bed, and an EMH. The base configuration uses one of the modular-framework spaces for emergency medical facilities. An Eagle arriving at the scene of a mass-casualty event can thus have a functioning twelve-bed field hospital operational within the hour.
The transporter room is functionally identical to the Aquarius equivalent, with a standard seven-place platform. Unlike on the Aquarius, there is no shuttle bay on the Eagle now that planetary landings for a vessel this size are considered routine.
History

When the Yorktown-class entered final design review in 2401, the requirement for a new integrated escort was already on the table. The Aquarius had proven the concept over nearly two decades of Odyssey operations, but the Yorktown’s more tactical profile - specifically its Multi-Vector Assault Mode - required a purpose-designed successor.
The Eagle was developed concurrently with the Yorktown, with the docking cradle and MVAM systems designed together from the outset. Just as the Aquarius had drawn from design principles and lessons from the Defiant-class, the Eagle benefited from the lessons and technology developed for the powerful Shran-class.
Early trials revealed that the Eagle’s higher cruise speed eliminated the pacing problem that had occasionally made the Aquarius an awkward partner for the Odyssey under power, and the multiphasic shielding passed combat simulations that would have left an equivalently manoeuvring Aquarius more damaged.
The Yorktown-class was delayed by Frontier Day in 2401 and the subsequent removal and redesign of Fleet Formation Mode hardware; the Eagle entered service alongside the Yorktown in 2403. Starfleet subsequently authorised independent production runs for assignment to starbases, where the Eagle fills the same patrol and utility niche the Aquarius carved out.
The Eagle-class In Play
- The Eagle is the successor to the Aquarius-class, designed and built as the embarked vessel for a Yorktown-class heavy explorer. Integrated with its mothership, the Eagle only requires crewing when deployed, where it plays the same role as its predecessor: escort support, away mission capability, and close-range fire support.
- The Yorktown-class’s Multi-Vector Assault Mode means the Eagle can be deployed from aboard the mothership without a crew. The Eagle can be the embarked ship for an Odyssey, but without the MVAM integration.
- If not assigned to a Yorktown, the Eagle is most often a support vessel for a starbase. Even as an independent command, it will still rarely venture more than a month away from a station.
- Accommodations are slightly better than the Aquarius - more windows, more space - but the Eagle is still a utilitarian ship, not a comfortable one. Its small crew could lead to a tight-knit community, but the lack of facilities means they are rarely aboard together as long as on a larger vessel.
- The Eagle’s modularity means it can be prepared for specialised roles ahead of planned missions, but it is still a small ship with limited facilities. In matters of science or diplomacy, it will only ever play a support or advance role for larger, more capable vessels.
