Starfleet Non-Commissioned Officers and Enlisted Personnel
Starfleet Non-Commissioned Officers and Enlisted Personnel members of Starfleet who have not attended Starfleet Academy or Officer Candidate School. Historically, Starfleet has fluctuated in the number of enlisted ranks in use, ranging from just two in the early 2200s to nine at the height of the Dominion War. This fluctuation is a reflection of how high the percentage of enlisted members of Starfleet rises, as during conflicts, more individuals have wanted to enlist rather than go through the Academy.
Currently, Starfleet uses two enlisted grades and two NCO ranks: crewman recruit (for trainees), crewman, petty officer, and chief petty officer. In 2400, senior chief petty officer and master chief petty officer were sunset, and the three ranks of petty officer were combined, while the grade of crewman apprentice was eliminated.
Many non-commissioned officers eventually become commissioned officers through the completion of the Starfleet Academy coursework necessary to obtain both a degree and the additional training required of commissioned officers, a career path that is encouraged by Starfleet Command as a way of increasing the diversity of lived experiences in its cadre of commissioned officers.
Non-Commissioned Officers
Non-Commissioned Officers are members of Starfleet are technical experts and leaders of more junior enlisted personnel. All non-commissioned officers are subordinate to commissioned officers as a matter of course, though many commands have them supervising midshipmen, ensigns and even junior lieutenants as a normal part of their training. Non-commissioned officers may elect to become commissioned officers through the completion of Starfleet Academy coursework or Officer Candidate School.

Enlisted Personnel
Enlisted Personnel are members of Starfleet who have joined Starfleet directly and who have received basic training in their chosen career path. Crewmen are fully trained and able to serve on a starship or starbase, wearing a standard uniform with no rank insignia. Crewmen Recruits are still in training and wear the same uniform as Starfleet Academy cadets, but in silver rather than red.
