The USS Temeraire is an New Orleans Class starship assigned to the Fourth Fleet under the command of Captain Tharia sh'Elas. After an inquiry into the disastrous testing of the MARS stealth system aboard the Inquiry-class starship Thesis, Starfleet Command relieves Captain Italia Ruas of her command, opting to merge the crew with that of their aging counterpart, the USS Santa Fe. Whilst undergoing an overhaul, the ship has all traces of the controversial system removed, and is recommissioned with a new name and a new commanding officer. Redesignated as the USS Temeraire, pronounced Tem-uh-rare, the ship’s technological advancements and experienced personnel make her a perfect candidate for a new mission.

Design and Layout
The Quirinus System is a binary star system within the Velorum Space of the Beta Quadrant, an area of space not explored by the Federation. Two stars, Quirinus A, a class D white dwarf, and Quirinus B, a class L brown dwarf, are gravitationally bound to form the binary pair. The overall structure of the system consists of five planets and an asteroid belt.
Designed in response to Starfleet’s defense-oriented turn in the late 2380s, the Inquiry-class heavy cruiser is a fast, well-armed starship deployed in large numbers near the Federation’s borders. As standardization was a focus with the design, they are able to be produced nearly anywhere within the Federation, and a second 'block' of starships have been commissioned, making use of new technological advancements and upgrades. Temeraire is the fifth of the Block-II vessels to be constructed.

Despite having an enviable sensor suite and an array of scientific facilities that provide her the ability to analyze the wide variety of phenomena she will encounter on her missions, her suite of armaments make Temeraire nothing short of a pocket battleship. Simply put, Temeraire and her Inquiry-siblings are the strongest combat vessels of all of the Federation’s mid-sized starships. Combat is where the Temeraire truly shines, with eleven Type-XII phaser arrays, four burst-fire torpedo launchers and shield generators borrowed directly from the Sovereign-class. Additional hardpoints around the ship can be equipped with additional weapons, such as pulse phaser cannons in the bow and micro torpedo launchers on the superstructure of the hull, allowing Temeraire to be easily refit into an even more capable tactical platform in the advent of war. Highly maneuverable compared not only to her larger cousins but also ships in her own size class, Temeraire can literally run circles around threat vessels to take full advantage of her many weapons emplacements. Coupled with her shields and armor which allow her to shrug off most hits, the Inquiry is an extremely tough ship and a match on her own for nearly anything she would encounter out in the wilds of the Alpha Quadrant.
ORIGIN THEORY
Observation of other systems consisting of binary stars supports the theory that binaries develop through the fragmentation of charged molecular bonds during the formation of a stellar object. This binary system was formed about 6.64 billion years ago beginning as small clouds of stars and dust swirling through space. Scientists theorize a dying pulsar was devoured by a black hole which resulted in an explosion that created a protostar system. As the materials combined they began to form the binding elements that would become planets. As the system began to settle into a single star system, a rouge object was caught by gravitational forces. This sent the entire system spinning with resulting tidal forces that caused rotational chaos. Materials swirled in various directions colliding with others.

A high degree of automation means that, despite having mission capability on par with the Sovereign, Temeraire has less than half the crew complement. Happily, this ensures a comfortable standard of accommodation throughout the ship, and a variety of recreation facilities.
It took about a billion years for the two stellar objects to fall into a rhythm that created a stabilizing magnetic field. Similar to other star systems, heavy rocky material was pulled toward the center and lighter elemental material moved further away. Planets were born and destroyed until their defined orbits were established. Vulcan and Federation scientists who study astrophysics consider this to be a Level 3, P system. That is to say that a small protostar orbits a larger object with a denser mass while planets orbit the two objects as they would a large single star.

A unique ship-board feature is the recreation areas that ring the saucer section. Connected together as a promenade on either side of the ship, these two-story areas provide a sense of space and openness to help address the claustrophobia that can sometimes come from serving aboard a starship, while also providing extra space for triage and refugee accommodations should the need arise. Holographic belts of green space go down the center of the promenade and lounges can be called up as needed for different group sizes. A traditional forward lounge does exist above the forward shuttlebay, though.

Romulan colonists set up a preliminary base in 2207 and terraformed the planet over the next eighty years. While not fully M class, the climate ranges from desert to tropical. Three large continents and four smaller landmasses allow for flora and fauna to flourish. The south polar region oddly serves as the primary magnetic pole that disrupts electrical currents for six months out of the 14-month planetary calendar. This has kept the technological level lower than other inhabited Romulan planets. It also gave rise to an agrarian and independent society.

Modelled on the successful layout of its older, larger cousin the Sovereign-class, the bridge of the Temeraire has a slightly altered colour scheme and a much changed console layout across the bridge. Making the most of a variety of technological advancements, such as holoprojectors, holographic communications, in-built weapons lockers and three dimensional computer displays in places, the Inquiry-class bridge module is one of the most advanced in the fleet. Perhaps one of its most charming features is the emblem of the United Federation of Planets emblazoned on the carpeting as a constant reminder of all the ship stands for.

In a move away from more recent styles, and harking back to the traditional layouts of yesteryear, the Temeraire has a single center command seat for the commanding officer. Directly head of them, down a few steps and between the commanding officer and the holographic viewscreen, two angled consoles serve as duty stations for Operations (port) and Flight Operations (starboard). Next, and facing into the heart of the bridge to allow maximum participation with the rest of the bridge crew are duty stations for science (port) and tactical operations (starboard). Directly behind the commanding officer, and in a further break from tradition, a combined duty station serves as positioning for the two most senior advisors and assistants to the ship's commander; the Strategic Operations Officer (port) and Executive Officer (starboard). Around the outside of the bridge, there are countless other additional stations. Behind the main science station on the port bulkhead, additional science and medical consoles are available for mission operations, as well as access to life support and environmental controls. Adjacent to them on the starboard bulkhead, mission operations and security stations ensure the continued safety of the ship and crew on a day to day, mission by mission basis. On the aft bulkhead, engineering is the focus. With a large, entirely interactive and customizable master systems display (MSD) and other engineering controls, the representative from engineering has full access to the ship's systems.

Around the command center, four doors provide access to and from the bridge. On the forward port bulkhead, access is available to the observation lounge, whilst the starboard door grants access to the commanding officer's private ready room (available for use by any officer in command of the ship). At the aft of the bridge, both doors provide access to turbo lifts which enable the crew to access the command center from the rest of the bridge. The starboard turbo lift grants express, overridden access to key locations such as engineering, shuttlebay 1, sickbay, tactical astrometrics and transporter rooms 1 and 2.

*Temeraire was formally known as Thesis, with her name changed as part of her new look following an inquiry that saw her previous commander removed from command.
*Previously cordial relations have turned sour as the Thesis crew resent those from the Santa Fe who have transferred in and took their jobs, replacing respected crew mates (including the captain).
*Temeraire is one of the first vessels, in-character, to be assigned to Task Force 47 and will add strength to the new diplomatic and exploration focused pathfinder group.
