Class Description

Class F shuttle assigned to Starbase 11

Introduced in 2257 the Class F shuttle was is use through the 2260s and 2270s as an auxiliary craft assigned to both Ships and Starbases. The shuttle is equipped with an Ion drive engine for sublight propulsion and a matter antimatter reactor to power the twin warp nacelles for travel at warp speeds allowing the shuttles to travel between neighboring star systems.

Aft view of a Class F shuttle

There is a entry port on the port side of the shuttle the bottom half of which folds down to act as a bridge between the shuttle body and the port warp nacelle. There is also a step built into the nacelle on that side of the shuttle to facilitate entering and exiting the craft. The interior volume of the shuttle is divided into two sections the forward crew/passenger section and an aft engineering section. the froward section has two stations at the front just forward of the entry port for the shuttle pilot and copilot with three view ports arranged above the shuttle's flight controls. These view ports were equipped with blast shutters During normal flight operations these shuttles were kept closed and the shuttle was piloted on instruments only. The reminder of the forward section is equipped with seating for up to five passengers. There is a bulkhead dividing the forward and aft sections with a access door allowing access to the aft section from the forward section. The aft engineering section housed life support systems and the ion engine used for sublight travel.

The Class F is equipped with three landing pad that support the shuttle when not in flight. These pads are arranged in a tripod arrangement with the forward two mounted on the ventral surface of the the shuttles nacelles in fixed positions and the third pad mounted on a support strut mounted under the impulse engines at the rear of the shuttle.
