Sarek Squadron was a formation centred around the starship Sarek, a Sutherland-class heavy cruiser from 2400 to 2401.  It was under the command of Captain Taes of the USS Sarek.  In a joint-mission of exploration with the Romulan Free State, this squadron was assigned to explore the area of space known as the Typhon Frontier, beyond the coreward borders of Federation space in the Beta Quadrant.  Sarek Squadron was assigned to Task Force 17's deep space operations.  Given the limited tactical capacity of Sarek Squadron, their missions outside Federation space are short-term in nature, with periodic returns to Deep Space 17 for re-staffing and re-supply.

Operating out of a Starbase on the edge of the Azure Nebula, Task Force 86 is charged with border defense and counterinsurgency operations throughout the FederationFrom its Headquarters on Starbase 86, the Task Force manages and co-ordinates patrols of the Federation’s borders with her neighbors and responds to incursions, monitors criminal activity within Federation space, works with local governments and communities to push back against and disrupt that criminal activity.
Sarek Squadron was first constituted by Task Force 17 command, in partnership with the Romulan Free State, upon the commissioning of the USS Sarek in 2400Operating out of Deep Space 17, the squadron was primarily assigned to broaden the Federation's understanding of the anomalous mysteries of the Typhon Expanse and the frontier beyond.  As a mobile research platform with near-starbase capabilities in every scientific specialty, the USS Sarek was charged with reaching for the stars by solving imminent scientific mysteries, often amid humanitarian or diplomatic crises.  The USS Olympic, by comparison, offered a venue for dialogue and competition between Starfleet and the Romulan Free State, by hosting scientific conferences, publishing the Olympic Journal, and serving as an escort and ferry to Romulan scientists crossing Federation space to explore the Typhon Frontier.

From the initial conception of its commissioning, Sarek Squadron was designed as one of Starfleet's great experiments to improve diplomatic relations with the Romulan Free State.  Inspired by the Federation and Bajor's partnership at Deep Space 9, the USS Sarek was launched with a team of seventy-five civilian scientists from the Romulan Free State permanently embedded in the Sarek<nowiki/>'s science department.  The very first Chief Science Officer assigned to the USS Sarek was held by a Romulan Free State science minister, Flavia ir-Llantriant.  Aboard the USS Olympic, half of the science department was staffed by Romulan Free State scientists.  Although the Sarek Squadron was assigned scientific mysteries of great import, the real mission was for both crews to work as one.

Given the recognition of Captain Taes and Flavia ir-Llantrisant's combined expertise, they were granted joint oversight of Sarek Squadron's mission planning to make full use of the squadron's capacity.  The USS Sarek<nowiki/>'s first mission was to mediate treaty negotiations between colonists on the planet Tenope in the Typhon Expanse and the sentient clay they discovered to be native to the planetSarek Squadron's second mission involved a short survey, completed by both the Sarek and Olympic, of the dyson sphere that Starfleet first discovered in 2369.

One particular area of concern for the Federation is The Triangle, an unaligned region between the borders of the Federation, the Romulan Republic and the Klingon EmpireThe Triangle has always been a hotbed of criminal activity but the Federation’s shift in focus over the past fifteen years allowed several criminal groups to expand their operations and threaten the stability of worlds throughout the Federation.

The USS Sarek went on to explore an abandoned Romulan Star Empire outpost on the planet Ullho in the Typhon Expanse.  Early in their planetary survey, the USS Sarek was dispatched to the Delta Quadrant in support of the Blood Dilithium campaign. Upon the USS Sarek's return to the beta quadrant, Captain Taes began an exploration of the Typhon Expanse to understand strange changes in the energy output of the spatial anomalies across that area of space.  In that time, the Sarek rescued a lost Starfleet crew from a temporal vortex and protected a pair of gormaganders, whose migratory patterns had been impacted by increases in solar winds.

A smaller outpost, it provides support and resupply to Starfleet vessels heading to the chaotic, unclaimed region, and for many, is the last stop before the end of civilization.

Meanwhile, the USS Olympic returned to Ullho to to complete the Sarek's abandoned planetary survey; however they were attacked by an unknown assailant.  Protected by a Romulan Free State warpbird, the Olympic was escorted back to Federation space.

Task Force 86 has had along and illustrious career as one of the longest serving Task Forces in the Fourth Fleet's history. In 2399, when Starfleet tasked the Fourth Fleet to return to space they also knew it was vitally important that their backyard was watched just as much what laid beyond. As a result, Task Force 86 was designated with the task of border patrol and security. Task Force 86's mandate was put to the test in 2399 when the Archanis Sector was attacked by the Hunters of D'Ghor. The Fourth Fleet sent a large presence into the sector to defend the border and remove the threat to the Federation colonists and other important assets. Along with other task forces, starships from Task Force 86 responding immediately to the invasion and were able to eventually push the rogue faction out of Federation territory. Working in tandem with other ships, the border was eventually secured from further raids by the Hunters, however the clean-up operation would require a lot of effort. While Task Force 93 led on helping with repairs, rebuilding and recovery operations among the Federation colonies, it would be Task Force 86 that would be required to ensure the border was secure. Thanks to help from Task Force 17, who had built a brand new sensor array near to the border, Task Force 86 were able to monitor and defend the border from any further attacks. After several months of heavy patrolling and the installment of new defense grids (or upgrades to existing ones), Task Force 86 was able to pull some of its forces from the area after it appeared that the tension along the border had returned to the status quo.

During the end of 2399, every single ship across Starfleet was placed on high alert after multiple sightings of the Omega molecule were reported. Task Force 86 was given the simple order: secure the border. During this crisis, it was vitally important for the Federation's territory to be defended. Orders were issued to all Task Force 86 ships and bases to patrol various borders, in the event local neighbors decided to take advantage of the situation. Captains were ordered to do whatever it took to ensure Federation security was maintained, such a harsh approach was a surprise to many crews however when it came apparent that Omega was a genuine threat across the entire galaxy, it was down to Task Force 86 to maintain order and prevent chaos from creeping into Federation space. Along with patrols, Task Force 86 ships provided escort to convoys of ships evacuating from affected areas or responded to those who needed help.
