Class Description

USS Explorer in orbit of Goren IV

In 2366 a study of various ship classes and their performance during diplomatic missions. As expected the Norway and Galaxy class ships performed the best. This study also uncovered the need of a ship that could provide the type of accommodations on a ship much smaller.

When the Advanced Starship Design Bureau stated the design project for what would eventually become the Cardiff Class several designs were considered and the design that was finally chosen for full development was a departure from the standard layout of Starfleet ships. The secondary hull was held above the primary hull. Two catamaran hulls protected aft from the primary hull that held the impulse engines and just forward of the impulse engines was the ships single warp induction ring. Out board of were the ring connected to the catamarans were the two pods.

The final design of the USS Cardiff was roughly the size of the Norway class but a larger portion of its internal volume was dedicated to diplomatic operations and the standard accommodations was for guests and diplomatic personnel was up graded to the type of accommodations found on larger ships but the size of the internal volume did not allow for the expansive quarters that could be found on a ship of the Galaxy Class.

Along with Diplomatic mission the Cardiff Class ships were expected to carry out missions of exploration and to that end the ship was designed to house the current state of the art long and short range sensor systems.

With the design finalized Construction was started on the Cardiff Class in 2368 with construction of the first of the class, the USS Cardiff, being completed in 2370. After a successful shakedown cruise the USS Cardiff was commissioned later that same year by 2373 four more ships of the Cardiff Class had entered service.

In the intervening years the ships of the Cardiff class have proven successful in their primary role as Diplomatic Couriers and have also proven to be good secondary explorers. In such a role the Cardiff Class Vessels follow up missions to systems, Nebula or other recently discovered areas that had been previously explored by front line ships such as the Sovereign Class.

STARSHIP FEATURES:

  • The Cardiff Class is of a unique design. Instead of using twin warp nacelles like other ships in the fleet the Cardiff Class utilizes a single warp induction Ring.
  • The warp ring, impulse engines, and the mission pods are held at the aft end of the primary hulls catamarans.
  • The Cardiff class has two pods one on the port and the other on the starboard side of the ship.
  • The Cardiff’s secondary hull is located above the primary hull just forward of the warp ring and aft of the bridge.
